First Brew is Too Sweet. Insight?

motobrewer - Yeah, my first brew day was a bit of a mess...confusion is understandable. Undershot OG at first, causing me to concentrate through boiling, and make another batch...but in the end, OG ended a little high. If corn contributes a light, sweet taste, then perhaps it is...I'm not...

First Brew is Too Sweet. Insight?

I'm hoping someone can maybe put a finger on what might be the cause. I made BierMuncher's Cream of Three Crops. I kegged and starting carbing last night. I stole a sample to check clarity and color. The beer starts slightly bitter, but ends sweet. Not cloyingly so...but sweet. I did a starch...

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Not according to their record they didn't. And I got to watch my team play two extra weeks.

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Hey motobrewer...how's your team doing in the playoffs? Oh, wait...

Is it silly to desire validation?

Not at all. Unsolicited compliments are always a great confidence/ego boost. And it lets you know that your hard work hasn't just biased your taste buds towards your brew. Now, going out of your way to get validation and appreciation is when it becomes silly/sad.

    Another Portable Keg Setup

It's a little different since I have the regulator connected directly to the keg (figured it would be safer/more stable to have it on the keg, rather than the easily tippable CO2 tank) Parts: Ball Lock Keg: $25 at LHBS Quick Disconnect, Gas In, MFL: $4.25...

    Wanna get your mind blown?

I beat it with MC Escher...but it ended up guessing it when I gave it another chance. This thing is crazy.

    Another Portable Keg Setup

Haven't loaded the keg up yet...but based on EdWort's advice, venting the pressure off, and going at 2PSI works well through a faucet, so I'm going to follow that. It's my main concern, right now. Cpt - Nice setup. Now that's portability.

    Another Portable Keg Setup

Oh, it'll be colder than that here, too. But the TV is a long way from an exterior door, so I was hoping to keep it inside. I'm actually disappointed with the shininess of the keg. I've washed it 4-5 times with caustic soda now, and it still isn't shiny enough.

    Another Portable Keg Setup

Sorry, just excited that all my parts finally came in (and that everything fits together). http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a219/GateTwelve/?action=view&current=DSC_0375.jpg Now I just need to buy/make a keg glove. Superbowl deadline is looking good.

    cold crashing an ale

Cold crashing is used for both bottled and kegged beers. Once you cold crash and rack off (or purge from the keg) the cleared beer, it will remain much more clear, regardless of your storage method. By the time bottling/kegging occurs, the yeast is largely done multiplying due to the sparsity of...

    New Brewers.....listen....

+1 for accelerated aging chamber. Waiting is for chumps. (j/k). Time is usually the only thing that will correct most off flavors, or what can turn mediocre beers into great beers.

    Making a "CLEAR" beer...help me

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the gelatin mixture should not be added into cold beer - or vice versa - due to risk that the gelatin may congeal prematurely, and fall out of suspension without taking many other particles with it. I thought gelatin should be added to...

kegs, are they really this elusive??

I'm kind of surprised, too. Considering a thread about the morality of getting BMC/used kegs and its impact on brewers was how I first found this forum. I'd obviously prefer new, but can't afford that. Second best for me is a scrapyard - I figure once it's at the scrapyard, the damage is...

kegs, are they really this elusive??

I'm in the same boat for elusive kegs. Craigslist ad got nothing, called 5 scrapyards and only 1 had a keg (but it was a pony, and dented to hell), no friends know of any leads, and the local distributor I called, although very courteous, is (obviously) not authorized to dispose of even damaged...

    F*n rodents....

I must be too soft. I can't bring myself to use lethal traps (not a hippy, or anything). I have to use the humane traps, and release the little buggers a little ways away from the house. The one time I did use a sticky trap, several years back, I felt absolutely horrible - I found the little...

Having beer on tap in Colorado??

There probably isn't a state provision. It's likely up to your local city ordinance or park regulations. I know in my state (ND), open alcohol containers are fine everywhere (the lakes, middle of fields...that about covers what's in ND). However, the city ordinance for my city prohibits drinking...

Are you gonna bark all day little doggie... or are you going to build a Keezer?

Wow...that's excellent...gives me a lot of hope for my 1980's Kenmore freezer.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

1.) Make sure you let your wort cool to room temperature, then shake (or, after it has cooled in the pot, pour it into into the fermenter and cause some splashing), then add the yeast. You want to make sure that you let the wort cool before splashing/shaking, so as to reduce oxidization. It also...

    I've never felt lazier than...

Yeah, that looks about right. Replace most of the papers with Mountain Dew can pyramids and Red Bull cans, and it's spot on.
