    Bottling

Yikes! If I was experiencing those gravity numbers I would not bottle it. I've bottled a batch in the 1.028 range before and I experienced bottle bombs. What we really need to do is figure out a way to get the gravity to drop down some more. My trick to accomplish this is pitching in a...

    Simple & stowable 3-tier setup

Good for you! I was tossing around the idea of building a 3 tier brew stand, so I started toying around with setting it up using what I had on hand. Just like you I grabbed saw horses or built what I needed with scraps. What I ended up with worked well enough I didn't see the need to build...

Is there an ideal temp to take pre boil gravity with hydrometer

My view is that PBG needs to be measured at ambient temps. So to be the most accurate you would need the PBG sample and the O.G. sample at the same temps. I typically put my PBG sample in the fridge and leave it there until I am finished boiling, chilling and taking my O.G. reading. Usually...

    Advice to new brewers

    Agreed! 90 batches under my belt and embarrassed to admit it took me much more than 15 batches to figure out what you already have ( ;

Making the jump to adjusting my water

You are not far behind me. I too have just moved into the water chemistry part of home brewing. Only have 3 batches with water adjustment under my belt, and they are still fermenting. So... am patiently waiting on results ( ; What helped me get comfortable with the Bru'n water spread sheet...

    Brew Stand Project

Try finding a rattle can spray paint product of the trade name Hammerite. That stuff is tuff and durable. The finish when it drys is semi metalic and looks pretty cool also.

Counterflow Wort Chiller Build (and use)

Yes you should solder up as much of it as possible before installing those end pieces. What I did was solder up both end pieces separately then install them and solder the ends, where the 3/8" copper tubing pushes through the end caps. HTH

Mash PH is always 5.0 ?

I gotta ask how you are measuring pH? Using a meter or those ineffective strips? I just tried those stupid strips for the first time last weekend and got the same kind of results... seriously thinking about returning them!

Fittings question for 48qt Coleman MLT

Yup, that sounds right to me. It's a tight enough fit to not leak but not so tight you can't work it through with water as a lubricant. I had almost enough pipe left over (10ft piece) to build the fly sparge manifold later on too. That's a worth while thing to think about also, fly sparging...

Moving coolant line in new Kenmore keggerator

I don't think you can remove that without killing the whole refrigeration process... My understanding of that style of fridge is the freezer tray is what the refrigeration coils run through. So the freezer compartment above it is what the thermostat will control. Everything below the tray...

Fittings question for 48qt Coleman MLT

My 1st AG mash tun was the next size larger cooler (54 qts). I sourced out the parts to put a ball valve on the outside. That was a little problematic to seal but after a few tries I got it working ok. I used the same method as the video to make a screen to filter out the grain particles...

Specialty IPA: Black IPA Darth Vader - Black IPA

Just brewed up another batch of this yesterday, 2/15/16. I hit just under 7.0 gal @ 1.068 O.G. IBU's were targeted to 66.6 LOL! I've just started monkeying around with water chemistry and this will be my first dark beer with water adjustments, really looking forward to the end results :mug:

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Tru dat... LOL, must have been a little confused when I made this post. Should have been in the Darth Vader Black IPA recipe... my mistake ;) I actually brewed up this Centennial Blonde recipe a few days before, 2/13/16, and I netted 6gal at 1.040 O.G. It was the very first batch that I...
