    Carbonating by the bottle

Thanks Yooper, I guess I didn't word it right, but I'm only going to carbonate 1-22oz. bottle of each or maybe 2-12 oz beer bottles of each, not the whole keg.

    Carbonating by the bottle

I've got 5 gallons of Apfelwein and 5 gallons of Cran-Apfpplewein brewing right now, and I intend to keg each of them as still wine, becuz we will be taking a trip out of state that may last a month to 6 month (as yet undecided). I'd like to see what a sparkling wine would be like of each of...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Mine are 'perking away' at high 70's and almost up to the 90's some days here and doing fine - when all you've got to cool with ia a 30-40 year old swamp cooler, you do what you can - Summer in Montana, Love it!

    Man, I love Apfelwein

CORRECTION!! About an hour or two after I posted that there was no blowoff in the Cranapple, it blew all over the place - filled the bubbler/airlock (wasted the cheap vodka), and made a general mess of the area where it was stored. It's now comfortably "perking away" with a huge blowoff tube and...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Both batches are percolating like an old coffee pot; Apfelwein within 4 hours, and CranApple by 8 hours after assembling these brews! No blowoff on the Cranapple, but some really dark foam on the top, thanks to the molasses in the Jaggery, I suppose. The smell coming out of the Apfelwein is...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I've just done a 5 gal batch. The juice is non-sweetened and non-pasteurized. Before I only did 1 gal batches - one with cinnamon stick (kinda like apple pie). On this batch I used 1 lb. Organic brown sugar and 1 lb. Organic Coconut Palm sugar - and some cinnamon sticks. Wonder what that Coconur...

How to brew regularly without having a warehouse of beer on hand?

@ hafmpty - "Prep Batch 1 Mash Batch 1 & Prep Batch 2 Boil Batch 1 & Mash Batch 2 Boi Batch 2 & Clean Up Batch 1 Clean Up Batch 2 " I like that schedule .... with my 3 pot electric system, I could do that with 5 gallon batches! Pot #1 is Heated/sparge water - 5 gal., Pot #2 is an 8 gal. turkey...

How to brew regularly without having a warehouse of beer on hand?

I don't see the problem here. If you only drink 2 beers a day, those 50+ beers in a 5 gallon batch will last you less than a month. A 10-14 day primary, 2 week secondary, and 2 week bottle conditioning (being very conservative) would take about a month and a half to be ready for drinking - You...

    Ageing beer in a keg

I haven't yet cut off the dip tube (sounds like that's a good thing!), as I haven't got around to cleaning/sanitizing the kegs yet - I just kinda thought it was the normal thing to do from what I had read - thanks guys!

    Ageing beer in a keg

@ gnef - won't that leave a cup or two of star san in the bottom of my keg to mix with my brew? I know it is supposedly non-poisonous/toxic, but the thought of mixing in with my beer isn't too pleasant to my mind. Also, I have bought all new seals for the kegs, so thanks for reminding me about...

@ gnef - won't that leave a cup or two of star san in the bottom of my keg to mix with my brew? I know it is supposedly non-poisonous/toxic, but the thought of mixing in with my beer isn't too pleasant to my mind. THX To explain, I have read that you should cut off the bottom 3/4" of the dip...

    Ageing beer in a keg

@ friarsmith -"Perhaps consider, as others have mentioned, to add bottling sugar solution to naturally carbonate the beer. This has the added benefit of scavenging any O2 introduced during racking. You'll probably only need 3oz bottling sugar (vs the typical 5oz when bottle-carbing) as the...

    Ageing beer in a keg

Purging: how do I tell if/when there is enuff CO2 in the keg to purge it completely? You say a "few times" ... is ther a certain amount of time blasting the CO2 in there to make sure or do I need to do some more research to find out more on purging? THX

    Ageing beer in a keg

Thanx folks, with those answers, I'm going to put a couple of my 'useless' (so-far), kegs to work. I've got a couple of RIS's to make in the next week or so, and at least one of them is planned for a year or two aging (with friarsmith's "sip-tasting" in mind!). The one thing I was most...

    Ageing beer in a keg

I've got some kegs, but haven't started kegging my batches yet. If I were to use one or two of them for ageing an Imperial for a while, how long would the beer last in the keg before I'd have to bottle it? Also, would it have to be refrigerated for the length of time, or could it just be kept at...

    New Anvil Bucket Fermentors

BTW, I looked at the Chapman fermenters ... $119 for a 7 gallon sounds good for a low-cost fermenter, --there may be better deals that I don't know about,-- I just looked it up becuz someone in the thread mentioned it. The few differences between that fermenter and my Big Mouth Bubblers are...

    New Anvil Bucket Fermentors

Actually, I think you'd have to figure a way to measure the density of your wort, and not use the density of water! The 8.34 lb/gal would most likely be used for pure water, and might be a good 'round figure' but I have no idea how you would measure the density of each and every wort you put...

    Sourcing Water Salts

Hi jporacion - I don't really have much of an answer for you, more of a worthless opinion, because I don't use brewing salts, but I would think if you can check up on the tech/industrial salts that are available there. Ask the manufacturer/retailer if they are food-grade. I would think it would...

Distilled vs municipal water profile for same recipe

Just thought I'd interject an old memory here - I used to do Aquaponics, (Fish and veggie plants) and according to the City of San Diego back then, you could use ascorbic acid powder (Vitamin C) in the aquarium to remove chlorine and chloramines. Most Chlorine removers wouldn't get rid of the...
