Is this a good starter kit???

I got my kit at MoreBeer.com. They have two beginner kits, one for 70 bucks and one for 99. Both come with a bottling bucket and a fermenter. I went with the carboy one and all you really need after that is a brew pot. The second kit in this thread looked good but it seemed like it was 50...

is sleeping in the same room as my beer dangerous?

It is a lot. And I mean A LOT!!! I did some calcs on this a long time ago in some advanced science courses when we were making Wine and Moonshine. (yeah my High School was awesome!) It also came up a few years ago in regards to something else but i forgot which. You can rest assured...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

My brew schedule just got screwed up because some sugars and DME haven't arrived yet. I planned on doing a simple Coopers kit today and then do a much better German Altbier on Sunday or Monday. I have two primaries. 1 glass carboy and 1 bucket. I had aimed for the bucket for Coopers and the...

    Yeast starters and Yeast cakes

Newb alert. When using a blow off tube, do you submerge the end in water in the receptacle to prevent O2 from heading back up the tube?

    Yeast starters and Yeast cakes

Is there any benefit to re-pitching or washing other than saving money? Granted I am just starting out so I probably shouldn't compound things this early but I am just curious. I am moving to bottle this weekend and wonder if I should just toss the yeast cake to my poultry or save it.

Question about full boil vs. partial boil with kits

Looks like I'll do a partial boil. that actually works out because I can brew indoors that way and it is darn cold out there lately! ;-)

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

Just curious because I have a 5 pound tub of Oxy I rarely use but also 1 lb of C-brite. Naturally I forgot about the Oxy when I bought a lot of my cleansing supplies. I am hearing some conflict with C-Brite that it's Sanitizing properties are not that great. I also have Barkeeper's Friend...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

Can you use C-Brite with buckets for a soak? Also couldn't you just microwave or soak your rags as well to kill bacteria? How about a regular soft sponge?

Question about full boil vs. partial boil with kits

Well, I finally got off my lazy butt and started home brewing. I had been meaning to get into this for years. So I bought everything I needed to do full boils and off I went. I started out with an Irish Red Ale kit from More Beer and used a 9 gal brew pot to do a full 5 gallon boil (6 gallons...

    Best Beginning Beer Brewing Books?

I found the Complete Joy of Home Brewing 3rd edition by Papazian to be very informative and has something for everyone. Also not a brewing book but a great read is The Brewmaster's Table by Garrett Oliver (Head of Brooklyn Brewery). The book is filled with wonderful history of beer...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

Well I get ya but it can be used as a beach bag, book bag, extra clothing bag for traveling, scarring the cat. You know, the usual...:drunk:

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

The only thing you may have to worry about with a regular water jug vs a BB is what type of plastic they use and how it reacts. This may not be an issue but I would check it. Look for the logo on the base of the jug and see what its toxicity rate is. BB's seem to make a big deal about the...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

Thanks for the clarity on the secondary. I talked to the guy at the Brew Store and he told me as a primary that a bucket is much easier than a 6 gal BB because of cleaning factors. I now have a 6 gal glass carboy and a bucket both for primaries. Based on the discussions and since I am new I...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

I just started and am using a 6 gallon carboy as a primary and I had no problems with blow off with a 5 gallon batch of Irish Red Ale. I want to expand though to make more than one batch and possibly move to a secondary stage with later varieties. I am heading to the Brew Shop this afternoon...

    Wal*Mart has Decent SS Pots

Yes it's a Miljoco. I used to sell thermometers and gauges in my last job and this is very nice. Large face makes for easy reading. I also tested it and it is exceptionally accurate. Both the valve and therm are welded and with very solid workmanship. Interior is smooth and efficient...

    Wal*Mart has Decent SS Pots

When I was looking for a pot I found a nice Turkey frying kit at Target which was a 40qt. Alum. pot with burner for under 50 bucks. Not bad if you like Alum. However on Ebay I found a 9 Gal SS (18-8) Brew Pot with a 1/2" SS ball valve and built in thermometer for 100 bucks plus about 10 bucks...

    C-Brite No Rinse Solution

I have 1 lb of C-Brite Cleanser (which I am assuming is the same as the Sanitizer because of the labeling issue) and I have 3 Oz. of Star San left (used some for my first batch). I am new to brewing but so far I seem to prefer the Star Sans because the chlorine smell of the C-Brite is strong...
