A couple of questions about Extract brewing procedures.

For my first two batches I did partial grain/extract (LME) kits. Both had relatively similar instructions and had me steep my grains in a bag for 20-30 min while the water heated up to 160-170 degrees. I have a couple questions. 1. I have basically been steeping my grains in the cold water...

    water jug as carboy?

You can use them as long as they are rated 0, 1, or 2. I have a 5 gallon jug I was going to use but it is a 7. Big no no on that. It is way too toxic.

A couple of newbie questions here

If you are brewing with extracts then you really don't need to worry about water too much because it will be boiled in the Wort. there are still some risks of flavor but water is really a major concern for all grain brewers. Malt extracts generally already have all th eminerals they need right...

Bottle Conditioning vs Carboy Conditioning. What's the difference?

As far as I can see around the HB world, secondary fermentation or aging is done primarily for clearing the beer. this serves a couple purposes. 1. the beer is clearer so it looks nicer. You may not care but maybe you want to impress friends, etc. 2. It reduces the possibility of...

is sleeping in the same room as my beer dangerous?

No I am pretty positive it was CO2 and breathing in regards to a sealed room not methane. I know this because when I saw this thread I immediately remembered that episode as a I saw it recently. Either way the answer is what you said. Fermenters can't release enough CO2 to kill you unless it...

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

I have boiled 4 gal on my stove before so I know that is an option. I figure if 6 takes too long I could just boil 3-4 in y main pot and then boil another 2-3 in another pot ( I do have) and add it in at high and keep the boil going.

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

It's not the cold that bugs me. It's the ridiculous rain or potential sleet/ice storm coming our way.

    Equipment for a full boil

How fast does a Wort Chiller work? Say for a 6 gal batch reduced to 5 and just under boil. Are we talking like 15 minutes? P.S. My kettle has a thermometer in it so the rod enters about 3-4 inches into the pot. Is it easy to get a Wort Chiller around that?

    Help with Holiday Ale

Well maybe it will turn out to be a sweet and rich Bitter. Low alcohol isn't bad. It just makes it a drinking beer.

    Pint glasses

If you are using detergent then no film should really form. P.S. Is anyone weird like me and drink your beer by slowly rotating the glass to absorb the rings as you go or do you just let them sit and admire them?]

    Equipment for a full boil

AZ, When I did mine I cooled in about an hour without a chiller. Do I need to be faster?

    Equipment for a full boil

Yeah I forgot to mention that you can do without a ball valve if you siphon and it also helps limit sediment.

    Help with Holiday Ale

    To check my math I use the simple formula: OG - FG * 131 = ABV So for you I did: (1.060 - 1.030) .030 * 131 = approx 4% (3.93%)

    Help with Holiday Ale

Well if your numbers are correct I would say somewhere around 4% but you may want an opinion from someone more experienced on here. Also if you get scared of your bottles you could chill them to slow the fermentation after a little while. Plus I would refrigerate any bottles that make it to...

    Equipment for a full boil

I am a beginner but for my first batch I did a full 5 gallon boil with a LME/Grain brew. I used a 9 gallon kettle with built in Thermometer and a 1/2 inch ball valve. I did not use a wort chiller though. Instead I used a Keg bucket, placed my kettle in it and with a garden hose ran cold water...

    Help with Holiday Ale

Just make sure those bottles are kept in a closet or something because if one or more blows up it could be dangerous.

is sleeping in the same room as my beer dangerous?

Beer is like a dog. It will love you unconditionally but will give you a headache when it wets the carpet. :cross:

Why a bucket? Can you ferment in a carboy?

Well I have a very large patio/porch out the back which is covered by our Dormer so technically I could just put it out there and stay dry. But if my range can hit the boil (which I think it can as I have boiled a lot of water on it before) then it's just more comfortable. Either way this...

Yeah sounds like fun. Small spaces and CO2 with no vent rocks!!! :rockin:

Thanks. I am reassured now so tomorrow is ALTBIER TIME!!!! I just hope my range can boil 6 gallons because the weather sucks and can't use the burner. :ban:
