    Fruit Beer Watermelon Wheat

Like this post a lot, I am inspired now. Going to take 5 gallons of the wheat I made a couple weeks ago and rack to a keg, add 4-6 cups watermelon juice along with a few sprigs of mint leaves chopped in a hop bag and quickly sterilized in a bit of water. I did just the mint last year and it...

How long do you age your Barleywine or RIS and do you keg or bottle?

I always bulk-age all my big beers in carboys or kegs (depending on what is handy, recently, kegs are just easier to deal with) for 6 weeks for the first 5% ABV, and 1 month for each additional 1% (i.e. 10% ABV gets 6.5 months of bulk aging minimum), then bottle with fresh yeast. I find that...

    A four batch day

Wow, I did two 10-gallon batches last sunday and it just about killed me, didn't help that it was 90* and sunny as hell. Took me about 8 hours. Only 1 burner though.

    GABF 2010. Who's Going?

Has anyone seen anything mentioned about the VIP entrance this year? (i.e. if you buy tickets with your AHA membership do they all get stamped for the VIP entrance...are they having one this year?) edit, nevermind, they are having it again...

    Clueless about Maturation

As a rule of thumb, I go 6 weeks minimum from brewday to drinking, and another month for every 1% over 5% ABV. Obviously, for beers with a lot of late hops, I'll drink earlier to avoid loss of hop flavor. I have a ~15% ABV barleywine that is gonna be a while before I taste...

    Colorado Barrel Source

Can't quite figure out which category to put this in, but I got an e-mail from a local distillery who is offering their used whiskey barrels...very good deal I think, I will be picking one up someday soon. I have no affiliation, just thought i would share. I doubt they would ship...

Thinking about a weekend trip to CO - help me plan?

Thats cuz I'm here :rockin: Seriously though, Avery is worth going to even if you don't take a tour...it is a brewery...they have a mash tun, a boil kettle, and huge fermenters. The Tap Room with 22 beers on tap and windows into the barrel aging room are worth it. And if you go and the...

Thinking about a weekend trip to CO - help me plan?

Roads like Trail Ridge are sketchy at best out here this time of year....they are surely still getting snow up there...No other good way to get to Granby/Winter Park from FoCo. i.e. it might be open now, but might not be open this weekend... Lunch in Boulder - go mountain sun...kill two birds...

Thinking about a weekend trip to CO - help me plan?

BOULDER! I don't know why you are skipping it, and whoever said Coopersmiths is better than Avery doesn't know beer. Tommyknocker isn't very good in my opinion either. If you skip Boulder, I think you are missing out. Avery, Mountain Sun, Oskar Blues (they have restaurants in Lyons and...

Where to dry equipment after sanitizing?

The whole point of no-rinse sanitizers is to use them right after they are sanitized...no drying required.

Mash for Dinner, Sparge for Breakfast - Anyone?

Some bad info in this thread. Mashing overnight will not leave you with a sour beer (unless it cools well below 120 and you add fresh malt or bugs, and it will not convert to 100% simple sugars (especially if you have crystal or other un-convertable malts). I have done this twice in the past...

    Breweries/Beer Tourism in Japan?

I will be in Japan for a little over two weeks, for a few days of business meetings and 11 days of traveling. Main cities will be Tokyo, Tokushima, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Hakone, Kyota, Koyasan, and Osaka. Anyone have any experience doing anything beer related in Japan? Brewery tours (in...

    DIY Drill Centrifuge

@600rpm the g-forces (x g as commonly referred to in my field) are super minimal, it has to do with the radius of the tube relative to the center of the 'rotor', but 600rpm is very very slow, I routinely spin yeast at 10,000rpm and they are fine. You may want to put some sort of safety on the...

    Maharaja Clone

\ I didn't say anything about the website, and I didn't say that they don't use Bullion now or haven't in the past, I'm just saying that the recipe, on a piece of paper, that they gave out in 2009, was listed above in the thread. So maybe Maja 2010 has bullion, but as far as Avery brewers (who...

    Maharaja Clone

To be fair, I know you hang out there and all, but the recipe that Avery gave out at their society meeting is posted earlier in the thread and I also have a copy at home which is the same. Maybe they did change it recently, but this is an old thread, so who knows...I'll ask one of the brewers...
