I have a burner, if doing the boil outside is not a problem. Having an outdoor burner is too useful an item to ignore.

The idea of some sort of lube between the stopper and the airlock sounds like a wonderful idea. My only concern is whether it would manage to contaminate the brew in the fermentation vessel. Is this a valid concern, or do you think the fit would be tight enough to discourage that? I will...

I will be very interested in hearing about you folks' cider experiments. In my experience, even cider that failed for drinking is good for cooking and I'll gladly share those recipes with anybody who wants them.
