    Can't catch a break

I BIAB. I use a candy thermometer and have never had a problem. I would agree with the other suggestions and strain if you are preboil. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I hear you. It's been 4 for me. Too much time at work and too darn cold even in the garage. But I'll be breaking the drought this weekend with a Rye IPA. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

What to do with extra beer?

I've heard people talk about priming with table sugar. That's sucrose, not dextrose, I've read that some strains have difficulty with sucrose. Never tried it myself. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

    American IPA K.i.s.s. Ipa

So the recent discussion of measurement precision inspired me to post this. I first made this when I started brewing and didnt have a scale, so I created a recipe where everything came in purchasable quantities. (I cheated and split on package of hops by eye.) Its actually quite tasty and Ive...

What's with the fraction of oz measurements in recipes?

This is a good question. I think we all can agree that some measurement is too fine . . . no one is measuring nanograms of hops or pipetting their water to be accurate to the milliliter. But on the other hand, what is too course? For me, its a judgement call. One part in 50 is probably a...

What's with the fraction of oz measurements in recipes?

As pointed out earlier, while its just as easy to measure 3.362lbs as 3.400lbs, its a darn sight easier to measure 3.4lbs. To put this in context, one kernel of barley is approx 65mg, so with a bit of rounding (horrors!) we get roughly 7000 kernels to the pound. So, if Im measuring 3.4 lbs...

What's with the fraction of oz measurements in recipes?

No, but it is easier to measure 10.0 lbs than 9.95, 9.90 or 10.00 lbs. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

What's with the fraction of oz measurements in recipes?

But even there, the alpha acids concentration can vary within a particular hop type by more than 10%. If the recipe calls for 0.5oz of Simcoe and I accidentally shake out a bit too much and find myself with 0.55oz on the scale, I'm not worrying about it. As far as base grains go, it seems to...

    Packaging Hops

I imagine they will be fresh. I don't think my friend is drying them. If I want them dried, I will have to dry them myself.

    Packaging Hops

My wife has a friend in another state who grows hops. She has offered to send us some. My questions for the collective are: How to package it for shipping? Ziplock inside a padded envelope? How to store? Vacuum-seal and freeze in packages of a few oz each? How much whole flower compares...

First BIAB - looking for advice...

It depends on the size of the grain bill. I've done a couple of 5 gal batch BIABs in a 6 gal pot. One was a big IPA and I had to substitute extract for some of the 2row, simply because I couldn't fit 15 lb of grains plus 5.5 gals of water in the pot. On the other hand, 10-11 lb batches work...

    Good head but tastes flat

I tend to only put my beer in the fridge as I need it, so the last of the last batch probably had about 5-6 weeks before cooling while the first of this one has had about 2 now. (The problem being that Im now out of the last batch. I guess Ill just have to drink commercial for a week or two.)...

    Good head but tastes flat

So, my latest batch (bottle conditioned) foams up a good head when I pour the bottle, has good head retention, but there is very little mouthfeel from the carbonation, and indeed, other than the head, you cannot see much carbonation in the glass at all. Any thoughts on what the cause might be...

    Couscous in beer?

Dont see why not. I believe it is simply coarsely ground durum wheat with the shells removed. Not sure it would be any cheaper than using your own wheat from a brewstore, but sure, why not?
