Brew Shop - An Android Homebrew App

Just one housekeeping suggestion... Make sure that you contact the BJCP for permission to use the guidelines in your app. They prefer to have you link to their website so that updates are immediately reflected, but exceptions have been granted. There won't be a fee or anything, it just adds...

    Whirlfloc and head retention

Good head is the reward for taking care of all the small details along the way. Anyone married for a while knows this fact. Head retention is always a balancing act between small weight proteins, hop isomers, alcohol quality, temperature and carbonation. The proteins and isomers that go...

    HopShot and Beersmith 2.2

In Options > Units you can change the hops to ml or mg. It's really more accurate to measure hops in grams, anyway. Or, if you prefer, you can leave hops in ounces, but enter the dose in ml. Just type "5 ml" in the ingredient amount field and BeerSmith will convert it to ounces.

    HopShot and Beersmith 2.2

    If it's not already in your v2.2, then it's available as an add-on update. Home Tab > Add-ons > + > Hop Update 2013

    Adding Piloncillo to beersmith

Piloncillo is sucrose. As such, it is 100% fermentable and has a 100% yield (1 lb in 1 gallon = 1.046). It's entered as any other source of fermentables, in the grain section.

    2014 BJCP Guidelines

I think what Homercidal is saying is that there's a difference between feedback and approaching every beer as if it needs to be "fixed." Something missed by most judges is that the evaluation itself is half of their feedback. Just describing what's in the glass without any style reference...

    2014 BJCP Guidelines

Unless you are simply handing your beer to someone without any comment at all, you certainly are defining "style." Every time you explain, you're creating a definition. That's not an attack on what you're saying, just the reality of how we all present our beer to others. There, see? The...

BeerSmith System Settings for MoreBeer 20 gal BrewSculpture?

Equipment profiles in BeerSmith are just a launching point. Same with the Mash profiles. You'll modify both to fit your exact system and brewing methods. Start with the Kegs profile. Change the mash tun size to 20 gal. Change the brew size to 15.5 gallons Change the loss to trub to...

BeerSmith versus Brewer's Friend recipe discrepancy?

BeerSmith's extract default is 15% for steeped grains. This is changeable in the Options menu. Which calculation is chosen AND the Hop Utilization factor found in the equipment profile are what determine the IBU prediction.

What software is missing for home brewers?

For metric brewers (aka "modern"), it's hectoliters. ...Otherwise, it's US barrels or Imperial Barrels for the nostalgic. :rockin:

Top up with water as BeerSmith2 says or leave it?

Are you guys referring to what a Brew Steps report says? Or is this because some of your equipment profiles have top up water included? I think the instructions are embedded in the Brew Steps report, not actually calculated. This is just a reminder for getting to boil/batch volume if you're a...

    Blichmann Breweasy Beersmith Specs

Not a direct answer to your question, but I've had to figure out a lot of brewing systems. On any new system, I like to start with a water batch and then just a super basic grist to rough in the numbers. A water batch is just that. Start with a known quantity in the mash tun and go through...

pre boil and post boil gravity always off by 2 points

If you're only 2 points low, you're closer than me. I get a consistent 4 points differential. The issue, as best as I've determined, is in the water expansion percentage. BeerSmith treats is as actual water and not as just expansion. This is diluting the preboil gravity number and...

    Homebrew facepalms

Homebrewing taught me that there are three times in the process to watch for boil overs. 1) At the start of the boil, for hot break 2) When adding large amounts of hops 3) Every time I think it's safe to look away

Trying to wrap my head around it

The way to "fix" this issue is to know more about how the program works and how to adjust your profiles. As Backwoodsbrewing pointed out, the Scale Recipe function changes ingredient amounts. This lets you just input a recipe from a book or mag with the author's equipment profile and...

Hop compounds that leave during fermentation - Recover them?

The capture of CO2 and separation of volatiles is a pretty common practice among breweries around the world, including most of the largest US Craft brewers. They produce a lot more CO2 than they need, so at that scale it becomes a revenue stream. The trouble with the volatiles is that they...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

No guess. It does because you have measured it. It exists. YES!!! The higher the percentage of trub vs. the yield, the lower the brewhouse efficiency. Yes, but counter intuitively. It's always about sugar concentration in the fermenter. In BS, if you add volume to the batch size, BS...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

That's an accurate number. Once you saw the correct gravity, the efficiency number was correct. Correct. coincidence. That's a red herring that's clouding the concept for you. In this case the mash efficiency of 69% is correct. Again, you didn't make a brewing mistake. You made a data...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

No. And Obviously no because your results didn't even come close. What you did was create a math error for your self by confusing brewhouse efficiency with mash efficiency. BeerSmith doesn't dilute OG based on volume. It looks at the Brewhouse Efficiency simply as extracted sugar that makes...

Beersmith not calclating IBU for longer boil times

The IBU calculation continues upward even if the boil time is shorter than the addition time. The curve becomes more shallow than if the boil time is lengthened. BeerSmith will show an error message in the timer for any ingredients that fall outside the boil time. The effects are more obvious...
