System Test with water - have some more questions

Thanks for the response. Your rationale makes sense. Being a perfectionist, I am over analyzing it, mainly cause I'd like to end up with a brew that impresses myself rather than be discouraged about my initial efforts. I see your point though... I shouldn't worry too much about the gravity...

System Test with water - have some more questions

Ok, I'm going to take this all into consideration on brew day. If adding water is the accepted method for being over expected OF due to decreased volume, what is the preferred method when under OG, too much water volume. More boiling? I read that it wasn't recommended. I'm using filtered...

System Test with water - have some more questions

Thanks for the explanations. It's all starting to make good sense. Is the 60 pts per gallon an arbitrary number for showing the calculation or is it a fixed number when talking gravity points? I like your idea of the chilling routine, but am curious about why you use paper towel and not...

System Test with water - have some more questions

Yep, that makes sense Pie Man, but I'm a DME/specialty grain kit, which is why I was concerned about the addition of more pre-boil volume. I don't think there's anything I can do to compensate for the predetermined amount of DME, is there? Having said that... If I do another boil-off rate test...

System Test with water - have some more questions

I had been adjusting the gas output every so often to try and hit my 1G boil off, but I suppose that was a mistake and I should have noted the valve position after setting it to maintain a rolling boil and just determined what the boil off was and adjusted by increasing original water volume...

System Test with water - have some more questions

Hey! I was hoping to brew this weekend, but there was way more things I needed to dial in before I jumped in, and I'm glad I did a system test with water only as I have come up with several questions from the process. My system is a 65000BTU burner, 9G Kettle and 30 plate chiller. I...

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

Good info here, thanks. My wife will kill me if I buy something else before I make my first batch, so I'll have to dry run it and see where it gets me. BeerSmith will be a future purchase I'm sure though. You say sanitary water... I'm assuming that's boiled water, but does it need to be...

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

Well I didn't get to brewing today. I had to gather some more supplies and build my fermentation chamber, which took longer than planned. I didn't even get to do a dry run with boiling water And chilling it to get my flow rate dialed in, or calibrate my equipment. Hopefully the wife allows me...

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

The link says its a DC 12V pump. That would be for a camping trailer etc. How are you planning on using this? Or was it the wrong link? Thanks.

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

Ya, I was more thinking about whether I needed 5 g of starsan, or if I should make it in a smaller batch of the same ratio. I've since read that I can keep it for several uses, so I will make up the 5 g batch, dump what I need into another bucket at brew time. Thanks for the info on pumps too!

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

Thanks for the answers guys! 2 more quick questions... How much starsan solution is typical to mix up for a 5G batch? Any pump recommendations that are on the affordable side?

Starting 1st brew tomorrow - Questions

Hi, I'm taking the plunge tomorrow and am starting my first brew. I have a few questions that I've come up with that I can't easily find answers for, so I figured I'd ask and see if I can get any answered before I make a critical mistake. 1. My recipe calls for 6.25G of water. Can I...

    Fermentation Chamber

Well the good news is that I was able to get 17 1L swing top bottles from a bottle return depot for 75 cents each. It beats the 3.55-3.95 + shipping. So I will get a few more and bottle the first few batches. I just didn't want to spend $100 on bottles up front when I want to get into kegging...

Tested my hydrometer tonight - this normal?

The water was 70F and the chart said to add 1. I'll give the sugar thing a try and report back tomorrow. Thanks for that!

Tested my hydrometer tonight - this normal?

Hey folks, I decided to test my hydrometer for the first time tonight and used some filtered tap water. it's not RO/DI, but it's very good tap water as far as total dissolved solids go. It's a cheap $8 Hydrometer, but it read 1.006 SG. Is it normal that these cheap hydrometers be out by...

Can you keg a batch and bottle it from the keg for giving away and or taking it to parties etc?

    Fermentation Chamber

Looks awesome, Floyd! I was always planning on bottling the first few efforts, but when I was looking at buying 1L flip top bottles, it was going to run me $90 for 24. I live in a small town, and it's hard to come by anything other than 355ml bottles, which I knew I wanted to avoid. So I...
