    SMaSH or not?

So on a 30min boil, what times are usual hop additions? 30, 15, 5? I know everything is dependent on what you are wanting out of the hops. But, trying to follow this thread, it seems everyone has different opinions (imagine that!) on how important the timing of hop additions are. Out of my 8...

    Ginger beer recipe - Thoughts?

Lady's and gentlemen, see above for my nominee for post of the year 😂 I have a friend that does a perfect Nantz. It makes me giggle every time

    SMaSH or not?

Has anyone had experience with the Mighty Axe Julius hops? So my next brew i wanted to do an extract brew in a pseudo SMASH style. Basically one type of DME and one type of hop. I grabbed a few oz of those Julius hops and some Light DME. This is my first time not using a kit, so i wanted to keep...

What does a secondary fermenter do?

Just reading reviews on a lot of these products, it seems like you get what you pay for. Buy plastic and receive plastic and realize that one day something is probably going to break.

What does a secondary fermenter do?

Really? Is that because it is plastic and not stainless? That would be a tough pill to swallow to spend $200 on one with all of the accessories and then have to replace it in 2 years. I'm just using plastic buckets right now. Should i change those out after a while too? They are cheap enough to...

    Hello from Missouri, USA.

St. Louisan here as well - south county area! Blues in full swing, Cards in spring training, and we finally thawed out and have some sun. Cheers neighbors :mug:

What does a secondary fermenter do?

I want that exact Fermzilla. I have watched a bunch of videos on it an I'm convinced. I even like how if you use the collection jar to dry hop, you can purge the oxygen out of that with the side ports. That thing just seems super easy and convenient. I may not make the jump right away, but I...

What does a secondary fermenter do?

Would something like the Fermzilla be the best of both worlds? Get the beer off of the trub without having to transfer? I have been looking at one of those but not ready to make the jump. Perfectly happy with my plastic buckets right now as I learn.

    Sudden Onset Obsession

Question sort of related to this topic: I just kegged a brew last weekend. This is only the second one i have ever kegged. I read somewhere that some people tend to toss the first beer or so out of the keg stating that things sort of settle in the keg and come out in those first pours due to the...

    Sudden Onset Obsession

That top cap cost me a tank of CO2 when I was setting up my kegerator. I had no idea that it could come loose

What does a secondary fermenter do?

I get the argument that there could be other ways to clarify and reduce trub, but that’s not the point. DB’s experiment only works if all other factors are kept the same. His experiment is attempting to see if using secondary clarifies and reduces trub in his beer more than not using a...

    Projected OG

I'm working on a my first non-kit recipe here. Sticking with extract brewing, I am going to do a super simple SMASH beer just for the sake of learning some hops and extract flavors. (I know not all extracts are SM, but I still consider it a learning experience.) Now, DME is 42 PPG. I am going...

What does a secondary fermenter do?

I would love to see the results of your comparison batches. Please report back if you do that. I have two friends at work that brew a ton. As a new brewer, I pick their brain non-stop plus read this forum everyday - just soaking it all in. What's funny is that about 90% of people on this forum...

5 yr old brewers best kit...

So while we are on the subject, what kind of timeline are we looking at with LME? There are alot of people on this forum that say to always use the freshest LME/DME when extract brewing. But what is considered fresh? Like 2 months old? 6 months old? 1 week old? Also, is there a good spot online...

    Spring Beer

I work about a mile away towards Reavis Barracks on Lemay. And I live a couple miles the other way off Lemay just north of Baumgartner. Small world!

    Spring Beer

Basically the same with Crestwood. They are at least usually good about dating things too which is great. Not everything is super fresh, but at least you aren't guessing. A trip to Friar Tucks leads me down the dark path of a good hour visit and a hefty price at check out . I love that place.

    Spring Beer

Definitely my style. I always have some kind of low ABV session IPAs in my fridge. Great suggestion!

    Dry hop

So do you stick to fresh then? Or just watch how much I use if I go the pellet route?

    Dry hop

I was literally looking at these online. Anyone have experience with them? Like or dislike? This is probably my next purchase
