    NB's Chinook IPA

I brewed an extract batch of NB's grapefruit pulpin. Finished around 1.006 or 1.008 IIRC. I moved a lot of the late hop additions to a whirlpool hop addition, for increased aroma and slightly decreased ibus. Dry hopped with 2 oz in primary after 2 weeks and let them sit in there for 5 days. Then...

    2018 Dark Lord Day

I have only heard great things about the Dark Lord beer. What do you guys not like about it?

    2018 Dark Lord Day

I heard they were pushing it back quite a bit this year, so much so that tickets might not go on sale until sometime in April. I was thinking about going for the first time this year but currently do not have the funds for it. Plus I'd probably end up driving there picking up my beer and driving...

    bomber bottles pressure limit?

You'll probably need the heftier Belgian bottles. Check out the stickied thread called "Bottling Tips for Homebrewer" lots of awesome info in that, post 5 answers your question. However Revy posted this link from NB but I re copied the link for you anyways...

    Beer Tastes Sugary

The brown ale I mentioned above was 2 weeks of carbing in the bottle. Although I did stir as gently as possible to try and get it to completely mix. Next batch I'll probably do the 50/50 dumping in half the priming solution first and the other half a bit later. The reason I tasted the wheat...

    Beer Tastes Sugary

I still have not consumed it haha. I've been busy and kinda forgot about it. They are technically for friends so I'm hoping to snag a sip when I see them next. I made a 5 gallon batch for my second attempt (brown ale) and using priming sugar it was super tasty (a bit young still) for being 2...

First IPA - NB Grapefruit Pulpin

My next batch will be the Grapefruit Pulpin 5 gallon extract kit from NB. I need some help making some decisions based on the hopping schedule and whether or not to use a secondary for this one. I know it's not necessary but I want to maximize the grapefruit peel slurry and hop flavors. The...

    Spiced winter ale

You can add any sort of sugar. Whether it's honey, maple syrup, plain sugar, a juice concentrate of some sort or even a bit extra dme. The plain sugars will dry the beer out a bit though. I think the honey would be super tasty, probably around the 12 oz mark. Off the top of my head I'm not...

    Safe to use this carboy?

Its definitely not ideal. Unfortunately the basement is not plumbed out and I think it's better to bring the carboy down than a boil kettle lol. At somepoint I'll get a primary plastic FV but until then I'll just be extra careful transporting the glass.

5 gallon extract kits - initial boil volume 5 gal boil pot - hop utilization adding LME at intervals

Are you doing a full volume boil, or do you plan on boiling 3 gallons or so and topping off to hit 5 gallons? If you're doing a 3 gallon boil definitely add at least half to 3/4ths of the LME at or near flame out, this will greatly improve your hop utilization because the boil gravity will be...

What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

Question about oxyclean. I've used it a few times now on my carboys and blow off tubes and beer bottles I'm saving. But my blow off tube and glass carboy seems to have an alcohol-estery smell to it. It looks clean, is this normal? Or should I try soaking/cleaning again? Thanks

    Safe to use this carboy?

It seems like it will be okay. Most of the scratch seems pretty minimal, only a very small section catches my fingernail. I think Ill still use the uv glue cuz I'm a bit parinoid. I bought a carboy carrier and I'll probably wear leather gloves when moving it, which will be a lot unfortunately...

    Safe to use this carboy?

For those who are interested, I contacted Norther Brewer and they said that this 'scratch' is a normal thing and all of their glass carboys have it. I think I'll try the uv glue just for my own sanity. They said all their stuff is gauranteed for a year, so if it breaks with wort in it...

    Safe to use this carboy?

@jalc6927 luckily it is on the outside, so I wouldn't be trying to put anything inside it. I feel the same about not wanting to risk it. Not sure if they will exchange it or not, came in one of their kits I got as a gift. I'll contact them and see what they say. Thanks!

    Safe to use this carboy?

I have only used this carboy 1x so far. I turned it upside down to drain after cleaning and noticed this -see pic. It feels like a scratch and doesn't look like a crack. I have some uv glue from my fly tying hobby I might put in there to help reinforce it. Is it too sketchy to use? BTW it is a...

Quick question about agitation after the boil

I was under the impression that some yeasts are more vigorous and blow offs will happen with those strains. Is this a large misconception? I've got a ferm chamber, rehydrated danstar windsor ale yeast pitched at about 68F and had ferm set at 65. Recommended range was 64-70 and I needed a blow...

Question of interest about mash temperature and sugar

What I know about enzymes and the denaturing process is mostly from all the bio classes I took and a bit on John Palmers book. Essentially every enzyme has a temperature range in which they will be alive. The upper end some will start to break down, the lower end only some are active. Mashing...

Adding on to Strawberries tonight. Any suggestions to avoid infection?

My primary FV is a 6.5 gal glass carboy. If I wanted to add a 4oz or 6oz grapefruit vodka mix to it I would be pouring it down the neck. In my mind I envision that addition of liquid/peels splashing everything and carrying oxygen into the beer. Am I envisioning this wrong? I

Adding on to Strawberries tonight. Any suggestions to avoid infection?

If you soak fruit in liquor, say like grapefruit peels (upcoming grapefruit ipa), how can you add that to primary without splashing? Is that something that has to be placed into a secondary then racked on top of? I know use of a secondary isn't the thing to do anymore, not sure if you'd have to...
