    OG issues driving me crazy

@marc1 I added the acid to lower the pH and added the chalk to keep all my ion's in balance (which is what bru'n water suggests to do. I added all my water adjustments the night before and stirred it up good with my spoon and a whisk and in the morning the water was about as clear as it has ever...

    OG issues driving me crazy

Like put in half a gallon, measure that height, then a gallon measure that height...etc. That way during the boil I know exactly how much water I have in my boil kettle. Mine did not come with markings and I don't have any spare wire to etch my kettle

    OG issues driving me crazy

Hmm, maybe I need to relearn the points thing. I haven't read that chapter since I first read Palmers book a few years ago. I ordered a stainless steel ruler so I can accurately measure out my water volumes

    OG issues driving me crazy

Here is a picture of my grain. Maybe it is still too coarse?

    OG issues driving me crazy

In my past few batches I always seems to be a few points low when looking at my predicted gravity. Today, I was 9 points low. I had a predicted OG of 1.063 and ended up at 1.054. I can't figure out what else to do or try at this point. My recipe and methods are below. This was supposed to be a...

    Squeeze the bag

Does the expansion of water actually 'dilute' or give false readings of gravity? I took some advanced chemistry classes long ago but a lot of it has escaped me. To account for those percentages, can one simply multiply those by the inch or mm marking to find out what the corrected reading...

    Squeeze the bag

I know my pot is flared, I think my best bet is to do a measure and mark and then compare that to the math. From there I'll re read this thread and figure out what else I need/want to tinker with

    Squeeze the bag

I've completely derailed this thread, and I apologize, but how did you figure out the ATC for water?

    Squeeze the bag

@DBhomebrew Thanks! Looks like I've got some re-self math education to do!

    Squeeze the bag

Nice. I really like the SS ruler idea. Did you put in a gallon of water and use that to figure out where the mm's measured up, or did you use the formula for volume of a cylinder?

    Pictures of hop plants

@Shermwormbrew This is phenomenal news! I'm still going to be cautiously optimistic on whether I get any usable cones. Approximately what month are centennial cones usually ready to pick?

    Squeeze the bag

So I'm pretty handy and have a tape measure, however I don't know how I feel about sticking a metal tape measure in something im going to boil and drink. Is there an easy way to mark my stainless steel brewing spoon? I know there's the thread on etching but im not sure if I want to buy the wire...

    Squeeze the bag

So, without kettle markings, and dumping collected wart into another marked vessel, trying to measure the first volume running is impossible? I might just use the .08/lb to see if that helps me with my numbers. Lately I've been able to start/use a total of 3.75 gallons and end up with about...

Thanks Kaz! I'm trying really hard to not get overly excited!

    Pictures of hop plants

This is a first year centennial. Are these the beginnings of hop cones? It seems like its too late for them to develop into big delicious, usable cones, bit for next year is this what they look likem

    Squeeze the bag

Good ol math! Seems to be that a good average is .08 gallons of water retaine for every pound of grain. How would one measure this? Just weight the grain wet, then divide by 8.33lbs? For what it is worth, my best efficiency when starting with 3.75 gallons for apartment kitchen has come from...

    Pictures of hop plants

I went with centennial a classic, but one of my favorites and one I can add in pretty much any beer. Yeah I trimmed a bunch of stuff off after suggestions from here and put up two other pieces of twine from my bucket to the rails. Then I took more twine and wrapped it around the railing to help...

@JAReeves thanks for the quick reply! Am I correct in cutting off leaves that are damaged and unhealthy looking? I always did it with my tomatoes not sure if hops need that much tending too though

    Pictures of hop plants

I've got a quick question on trimming hops. I am a first time hop grower, in an apartment and a container, so I know I've got a lot going against me. It seems like my plant was doing pretty well, but I've got shoots coming from everywhich way at the base of the plant. Should I trim these and...
