    All-grain top-ups?

Split pot is what will work I think. Might be 4 gal in one, 2 gal in another, but hey, that'd work so long as i split my hops appropriately. Thanks!!

    All-grain top-ups?

I apologize if this is covered elsewhere. In reading threads I haven't seen it: What effects are there for topping up a small AG boil to make 5 gal batch? I've read for PM and extract and done it. But for AG? Here's specifically what I mean: I just built my 10-gal MLT to go AG, but...

First batch - about to bottle

What was the temp of the wort when you took the OG? The temp affects the gravity readings. Most hydrometers are calibrated for about 60f for accurate readings. Otherwise, the boil vigor more affects the hops effects, not so much the extract. The extract really just needs a pasteurization and...

    Special Bitter Recipe Input Request

Hi all, Looking for recipe input for a Special Bitter. After reading recipes from around the net, here's my initial take. I am shooting for low abv and good mouthfeel. I want a lower cabonated session beer like those found on tap in english pubs. DC Republican Bitter 6.5 lbs. American...

    What is Partial Mash

higher temps (70-73) will in theory give more esters (fruity) notes. If you like styles that have that (Pyramid, for example) then go that route. Otherwise, stick to 65-68. That's my direct experience on Hefes, which I love. I'd love to hear others on this who know way more than me.

    When to use Co2

damn! That sux. Oh well, I'll push what I can, and then upgrade as time and $ allow. Thanks for the tips.

    When to use Co2

correct, no regulator. I got a 10-pak and all I am using them for is a 3-gal mini-keg, so figured this was a good way to go. I'm only picking up a fridge tomorrow, so just getting started towards having a kegerator/on-tap beer.

    When to use Co2

I just bought the exact same setup. Instructions were to prime with sugar, as you did, in the keg; wait two weeks, and only then use the C02 to pour. The C02 in this case is used only for pressure to get the beer in the tap line, and is not a forced beer carbonation use of the C02, since the...

    Hello from Ontario

mmmm, moonshine that tastes like beer; bourbon-barrel-aged beer that tastes like whisky. What the hell is going on around here! Good stuff, enjoy brewing beer. In my experience it's a little more conducive to upright evenings than moonshine :)

    Secondary Fermentation Vessel?

I used to siphon from secondary (my better bottle 5-gal) direct to my bottles. I found that messy, as I am a slobby dum dum. So, I now have an ale pail with spigot and I siphon from secondary to that ale pail. It works well--since I need to sanitize the bottles anyway, I just fill the ale pail...

    Ready to try AG?

Making the jump to AG, as I will do soon, used to seem like stepping into some mystical world. Thanks in large part to the people on this site, I feel ready to try it out. Can't wait until my 10-gal cooler arrives so I can convert it. Thanks for this post and the many others which have helped...

    Batch Sparging

No mash out, single sparge = 75% Mash out, single sparge = 80% Mash out, double sparge = 86% Interesting. Thanks for posting! Will you help clarify for me: On the double sparge, I take it other than recirculating the vorlauf for clarification, you sparge with fresh sparge water the 2nd...

    Secondary Fermentation Vessel?

Totally 2nd the 5-gal carboy as secondary. I use a Better Bottle and love it. Either one is great, just keep at 5-gal and either glass or Better Bottle. Have fun!

    I'm no longer a newbie :)

Excellent work! I'd be disowned for that :o If I could only describe the look my wife gave me, when, after she volunteered her old mini-fridge for my keg storage in the basement, I mentioned I might need to "alter" it a bit by drilling some keg tap holes in it. That went over like a lead...
