No sugars left for Berliner Weisse?

Update. I used my new DIY stir plate, made a starter & the fermentation took off like crazy. It's already dropped to 1.020 & still going. Thanks too all for the advice & general discussion. I'll let you know a final update when I've got it bottled.

Thanks. That'd be sweet if they were glasses w/ etched bottoms like an earlier poster speculated.

My new goal- $10.00 to make 5 gallons

For those at the proper latitude, you should look into growing your own hops. Definitely will save you a good bit of cash if you use them year after year.

    DIY Stir Plate Problems

I just built mine & was having some trouble at first. I bought two 1" stir bars, but only one of them worked - it had a different diameter than the other. It might just be a factor of finding the perfect size stir bar. See if you can borrow a variety of sizes from other people in your local...

No sugars left for Berliner Weisse?

I was amazed when I took a gravity reading last night. The gravity had only fallen from 1.038 to 1.036. Maybe I can salvage this baby after all. I aerated just by shaking & only pitched a Wyeast smack pack. I'm going to borrow an aeration stone w/ O2 tank and make a big starter using my stir...

No sugars left for Berliner Weisse?

Hi all, Recently made up a Berliner & wanted it to be nice and sour, so I pitched Lacto and let it sit for a week around 85 degrees. I pitched my saccharomyces the other day (was too stupid to think of taking a gravity reading!) and have basically seen no fermentation signs. If the...

How to pour a Black & Tan

Another trick that I think helps - give your beer on bottom a larger than average head. 3 or 4 fingers.

Random Things Brewing Has Taught Me

I've always been an English/History person. I never had an interest in science until I started brewing. Definitely using that part of my brain quite a bit now & finding I'm really enjoying things like DIY projects & learning about hop chemistry.

    Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout

I've talked with a professional brewer who made this at home and apparently had great success - his big tip was to use the PB2. Let us know how it turns out!

    The importance of cleaning/sanitizing!

Just did my first bottling tonight - the beer tasted pretty decent so I'm really looking forward to where it's at after 3 weeks or so. I'll say that I was thinking "some of this cleaning & sanitizing is just ridiculous...does it really make that much of a difference?" However, I trusted...

    Thanks in advance

Hi all, I've read Papazian's The Complete Joy of Homebrewing & have finally put to use my homebrew themed Christmas presents from a few years back. I racked a Porter into my secondary carboy a few days back & now am trying really hard to be patient. Thanks for all the great tips...

    Straining wort before pitch

Hi all, First timer here & naturally nervous about my first brew. It's a true-brew porter kit. As I was putting my wort into my 3 gallons of cold water, I strained it. As I look back on the directions, this was not suggested. Could it be possible I strained out some vital elements...
