I'm going to build a stir plate as well? What about the stir bar... do you just pitch that into your fermentor along with the yeast, or should it be fished or strained out (keeping sanitation in mind)?
Go figure... I just popped a couple tonight and they form a beautiful head. Just a few days ago this was not the case. I opened a third just to be sure. I guess what you guys are consistantly saying about "giving it time" is the key. Patience and homebrew together are virtue.
The Amarillo is supposed to be very close to Cascade, so I would go for it. As I said and others have mentioned, when used as a bittering hop, you don't get much (if any) of the flavor.
I have a similar problem that I just posted in a seperate string. I have beer that I've had in the primary for 1 week, 2 in the seconday, and 2 in the bottle. Although carbonated, they don't form a good head. I've considered adding additional sugar (small amt) but have been concerned with having...
I've had a similar problem... even when I brewed my first few batches years ago. My first batch in years is finally about ready. 1 week in primary, 2 in the secondary, and two in the bottle. There is carb in the bottle... nice hiss when I open the bottle, but the beer doesn't form a head. Is it...

Did you get this out of Homebrewing for Dummies? That has been my go to book since I started. I had a similar question I just posted regarding "topping off the secondary".
Primary carboys are 6.5 while secondaries are usually 5. The extra space is usually minimal when you rack...
While browsing through the forums, I saw a pic of one of the over the sink strainers put on top of a plastic ale pail.
Bed Bath & Beyond Product
I'm gonna buy me one for straining and aerating.
These are pics of the "Son of a Fermentation Chiller" that I found online. The instructions can be found here: home.elp.rr.com/brewbeer/chiller/chiller.PDF

I wouldn't worry about it that much. I've topped off the seconday in the past with no problems (after boiling and cooling the water of course). What prompted my question is that I had so much room in the secondary. Usually I only had about 12 oz of headroom... this time there was much more. Your...
Thanks guys. That was my thought as well. I'm only going to leave it in the secondary for 2 - 3 weeks tops before I bottle. Appreciate the quick feedback.
Hey everyone,
I just transfered my Irish Stout from the primary to secondary. Took a hydrometer reading (check) and took a sample (great). However there was a bit more trub on the bottom of the primary that I am used to seeing. While this in itself isn't a problem, it left a lot of headspace...
You could also build one of these and put it in your closet. http://home.elp.rr.com/brewbeer/chiller/chiller.PDF
I've been responding with this to most questions on the temp issue. It's small enough for an apartment... just would need to have enough room in a freezer to freeze some gallon...
