Substitute for chestnuts in chestnut brown ale

I wouldn't be able to tell you. I've never brewed with any extra additives (fruit, nuts, wood, etc) as of yet. I'd was imagining crushing up the whole nuts and using the shells and all. I guess it depends on how "earthy" you want it.

Substitute for chestnuts in chestnut brown ale

How about Hazelnuts? I was curious about making a nut brown with hazelnuts.

    A little too sweet

My first brew was a little sweet before bottling (before adding priming sugar) as well. I'm happy to report that the carbonation process killed the sweetness and the flavor really developed well over the 3 week process. It doesn't taste like it did when I bottled. I'd imagine your beer will...

    12oz vs 22oz bottles

Is there a noticeable difference in how the beer develops after bottling between 12oz and 24oz bottles? For my first batch, I bottled to both, and I swear there was a subtle taste difference when between the two. I cracked open a 22oz after killing a few 12oz'ers, and needless to say I was a...

    My patience has run out

I'm a few days away from being at 3 weeks in the bottle with my first brew (American Amber). I counted seven empty bottles on the counter. To be fair, 2 of those were from giving a pair of friends a sample. The one I drank at week 1 had a lot of room to improve upon, but the taste matured...

    Second Batch Leasons Learned

Yeah, I was thinking about something like that as well! I actually had top off water boiled to sterilize and cooled in the event I needed it. I chose not to use it since it looked like I had pretty close to 5 gallons of wort.

    Second Batch Leasons Learned

Good call....no I didn't. The corrected OG is 1.045. Not much of a difference, but a little less "off".

    Second Batch Leasons Learned

Rofl @ Leasons. Meant Lessons, i'm tired.

    Second Batch Leasons Learned

So I'm excited to report that my second brew is sitting in the carboy, fermenting away (hopefully). For this brew, I didn't use a kit, I used Brewsmith to put together a recipe for a pale ale, so here's hoping I come out with a decent beer. I was much more comfortable brewing the second time...

    Whirfloc question

I'm going to brew my second batch of beer this afternoon, however, I do not have any whirlfloc tablets Am I going to need to make a trip to the store or will the beer be okay without it? It is going to be a pale ale.

    Full Boil?

My first batch called for a full boil, and I went out and bought a copper wort chiller that had about 4 gallons cooled in about 15 minutes. The brew store has those cool plate coolers that are supposed to be super fast, but they are more spendy.

    Full Boil?

I invested in a nice 8 gallon pot with spiggot and thermometer. I see a lot of recipes that have you create a wort from a smaller fraction of the batch size then use top-off water to get to your final volume. If I have the room for a full boil of 6-6.5 gallons without boiling over, should...

Thinking of growing hops...where do I start?

Yeah, I have learned more from this thread than I have trying to poke around blind on Google. P.S. The chart helped! How did you know I was a visual person? Haha.

Thinking of growing hops...where do I start?

Ok, that makes sense, the crowns are the sprouted hop plants. Sorry, not much of a gardener yet.

Thinking of growing hops...where do I start?

Ok, I haven't seen anything about a full crown. Sorry for the ignorance, but what is that, and is it the same process as far as planting/growing from it?

Thinking of growing hops...where do I start?

I live in Boise, ID. I've learned over the last year that, contrary to the potato myth, hops and mint are actually Idaho's top cash crops. So it seems like I'm in an environment where home grown hops could flourish. I've read a little bit on the process on the internet, and have browsed in...

First batch ever in my primary! I am excited.

I don't think taking a gravity reading will do anything to your beer as long as you sanitize everything that will touch the beer and take care not to splash the beer around to avoid oxidation. I took 3 gravity readings after my first beer was it was fermenting and it seems to have come out fine.

Theoretical: out of propane in middle

I guess its relative to what kind of burners you have, but on average, how many batches can you do on a tank of propane....like on a turkey frier setup.

First Brew - A week into being bottled

Yeah, I was going to wait too, but this thread gave me an answer I wanted to hear, so I opened one up to try it. So I can see the difference between 1, 2, and 3 weeks. The beer was good enough to drink after 1 week, can't wait to check how it develops.

    Bottle Labels

For those of you who have multiple batches bottled and stored, do you label your bottles, or do you just know what is what?
