    Golden Syrup

Sweet thanks! If I can't find LGS this morning I'll be picking some of that up to try. Cheers! :mug: Joe

    Golden Syrup

Thanks all!! I'm going to go check out a few more places and then substitute brown sugar... I know it won't be the same but I've had minor success with it. I hear the stuff is pricey. I just don't know why the LHBS's don't carry it... I mean enough British recipes call for it...

    Golden Syrup

Hi all, I'm currently brewing a clone of McEwan's Scotch Ale and they call for Lyle's Golden Syrup. I can't find it any place here in Missoula. I've searched in specialty grocery stores, regular grocery stores, brew stores ect... I'm looking to see if anyone knows possibly where I can get...

    sassafras alternative

As per the yeast... It doesn't take that long to carbonate (usually 12-24 hours, 72 max) at room temperature. Never done the extract version (yet). I have a bottle of extract sitting here that I will be using here right quick. When making my own extract, I just followed a recipe that I...

Glass Bottles and Bottling Bucket With Soda

Could you re-use commercially bottled (capped) rootbeer bottles? Cheers! :mug:, Joe

    sassafras alternative

I've used honey in traditional beer with good results. However most of the sweetness ferments off. I would imagine you could use it with good results. I have used molasses in cider (applejack) with fair results. You can't taste the flavors a whole lot in the cider. I think if it had less...

    Lets talk Soda FAQ!

I like the FAQ idea for soda. What do people do to make "Diet" soda? Does anyone use Splenda to sweeten it? If so how much? Thanks! Joe :mug:

    sassafras alternative

You can still find it at stores that sell tea or herbal supplements. I made a batch of rootbeer using sassafras and found that only after an extended amount of time (several months) that it even began to taste anywhere close to what we know as rootbeer today. I am going to be making some with...

    Mt Dew

I'd love a copy of this one too! I know they put OJ in it.. LOL But everything else is a guess. One thing is for sure, if the generics (MT Lightening) can make up clones that are close to the flavor of MT Dew, we sure can... Just need to put our heads together. Cheers, Joe :mug:

    Huckleberry Wine FYI

Hi all, I decided to make some huckleberry wine with this years crop of huckleberries. In doing so I found out a few important things that might help out others. The recipe I used was made with all huckleberries. I made up my must as per the recipe found at...

    Needle guage size?

Do you have any good books on doing this? Anyone make any howto posts of this? I've been buying yeast now for a year and am ready to start doing some farming as well. I'd really like some good references though before I make that move. Thanks! Cheers, Joe

Wineberries...what do I do with these? Wine :)

You could do pie. When I lived out east my mom use to make pies out of them. hahaha But of course why not wine? ;-) Cheers, Joe

    Huckleberry Wine

I have a recipe that uses 2#'s per gallon (blueberries). It is: 2 lbs blueberries 2 1/4 lb Sugar 1 gal boiled water 1 Pkt wine yeast I agree with you about flavor and taste. I would think you could almost go 1 to 1 hucks to sugar and do just fine and maybe even less (1 lb hucks to 1 gallon...

    Adding Cherry Flavor

Thanks guys! I appreciate the advice. After some unfortunate events (a family emergency) I had to dump my 7 pounds of cherries and am going to flavor things slightly differently. Instead of cherry I have decided to flavor things with vanilla caramel instead. My LHBS sells flavor extracts...

    Adding Cherry Flavor

Hi all, I have made a batch of porter that I would like to add some cherry flavor to. I'm kind of a stickler about things and would like to extract cherry flavor from cherries opposed to using a premade flavoring (extract). The cherries in our area are prime. I have pasturized the 6lbs...

    bagging hops?

I'm not a huge fan of the muslin bags. I think they are a bit of a waste of time. I just throw my hops in whole or pelleted, then I run the boiled wort through my colander (it fits right onto my primary -- it gets out the large particulate) and let things settle out in my primary and...

AG stovetop brewing in two pots...How to cool both.

I did two pots for a while and brewed great beer. Your hop utilization will be down. I would say cool one than the other. I would try and have it timed so one pot finished about 30 minutes before the other. Then I would also have ice on hand in the sink to cool off the second pot quicker...

Missed OG. Pissed off. Please advise.

It's more about the total finished volume of wort and the lack of sugar in the wort to ferment than what is left in the bottom of the MLT. The little bit of dead space in your MLT will hold some wort but what it sounds like to me is that your wort is more watered down than what it was supposed...
