On the ethics and legalities of acquiring bottles...

I have some local bars that I know the bartenders/proprietors fairly well. Two of them actually sell some good crafts! Every time I am at one of these establishments I see the bottles being thrown away, and I say to myself, "Self, you could do good things with those bottles, give them better...

    5 gallon carboys.... my hatred.

I like that Union! But I will move up to a 6gal carboy. When I went to my LHBS looking for another primary (specifically) they sold me another 5gal. Oh well, I guess I have two of these bad boys for some purpose that will eventually reveal itself to me. Thanks all for the responses! :rockin:

    5 gallon carboys.... my hatred.

If I did 4gal batches I would have to change all of the standard recipes though. If I just added less top-off water I would end up with a beer concentrate. I guess I've answered my own question... get some bigger carboys.

    5 gallon carboys.... my hatred.

So my 3rd batch is under way now, some probably lovely (never tried it) EdWort's Haus Pale Ale. My 5 gallon carboy is betraying me once again. My krausen is blowing off so hardcore that I am already down to 4.2ish gallons. This is my 2nd batch this has happened to. My question is, what should...

    basic recipe question

That one is way better. This thread seemed like a joke, but to help the OP, please follow some advice and pick up a homebrew book. I think a viable alternative for you is to buy a Mr Beer kit (as outlined in the other forum's responses) to get a feel for what brewing is actually about, at least...

What did you brew this weekend

I brewed some EdWort's Haus Pale Ale. As a new brewer I obviously haven't had it yet. Here's hoping for the best!

    lag time

1st brew (smack pack California Lager)~72 hours. 2nd brew (w/ 1000ml starter) ~4-5 hours. 3rd brew (dry Nottinghams) ~?? Not yet, but it is 24 hours since pitch. EDIT-- None of these have been what is probably considered properly aerated, they had just been filtered into carboys and slightly...

    Love at first brew.

LOL. I'm new to this thing too and I'm so glad I took the plunge. It's so much easier than I thought it would be... and some good results too! I've loved beer for years, took a few brewery tours, etc. but I never thought homebrew could be so rewarding. +1 on being all about HomeBrewTalk!

A brew for a diabetic friend?

He does shots, so no dice. I read on here somewhere that you can put bean-o in your primary to reduce fermentables. I don't think I'm going to try to get too high-tech with this though. I will just hope that he can enjoy one or two of my regular homebrews and call it a day with that. Thanks for...

    Can I split

I wonder what a Coors "concentrate" would taste like... more taste, more filling.

A brew for a diabetic friend?

Ok, thanks. I just wanted to know if there was something that other people had heard of that I was missing. I would never consider anything posted here to be medical advice, I wouldn't risk anybody's health that way. It is better to just have him stick to one or two and watch his glucose levels.

A brew for a diabetic friend?

I have a good buddy of mine that has diabetes and I would like to brew something for him (he just had a kid, I'm sure he could use a few by now). Whenever we go out for beers he can only have one or two because of the sugars in them. So the question is, can I make a GOOD beer that wouldn't...

Need to mellow out harsh alcohol

May be cost prohibitive, but, maybe keep that particular vessel for spiced ales only. I would try the baking soda and vinegar you mentioned for neutralizing the odors first though. Good luck.

    Popped first HB bottle today!

Congrats man! BTW, nice setup you have there. It looks like you are ready to get down with some All Grain soon with that nice keggle.

    Turkey fryer? Why?

That explains my porter-colored Fat Tire clone, LOL. I have a fryer but don't know where that big pot went. Stuck using a 3 gal pot for the foreseeable future.

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

True, still like to get my Florida hands on one every once in a while for novelty though. We only go up to 32s here :(

Blow off tube with no sanitizer

At least you have your priorities straight. :tank:

    Modifying Alcohol Content

Doubling the alcohol will change the recipe entirely. I'm too noob to tell you much, but probably double your grains, malt extracts, sugars (whole recipe basically) and keep the same volume of water. Also, there is something called BrewVint alcohol boost, that is a maltodextrine/dextrose blend...

Blow off tube with no sanitizer

Is regular water being too lax about sanitation? That's all I have used so far and had no bad results. I think with the positive pressure of CO2 coming out of the hose you could probably use anything, but better to be safer than sorry.
