Campden Tablets (Sulfites) and Brewing Water

Okay, heres my question for one of you who's a chemistry wizz. I have a 30L HLT but usually require about 35L for my all grain batches. I also add Potassium Metabisulphite at a rate of approximately 0.0666g/L. If I were to fill my mash tun to the 25L mark, treat with K2S205, mash in, and then...

Gordon Strong's Avant Garde Pale Ale

Perhaps Strong intends for the FWH be removed before the boil? I understand all calculators are different, but this is a 36% jump in IBUs, pushing it way outside the style.

Gordon Strong's Avant Garde Pale Ale

Hate to bring up an old thread. I was considering brewing the same beer but I noticed that that Strong says the beer should be 45 IBUs but when I run it through the calculator I got more like 70 IBUs. Can anybody comment?

    Sanitizing after brett fermentation

So i'm planning my first brett batch too. I'm planning to ferment in glass and I've got some separate transfer/serving tubing. What about taps, rubber stoppers, keg disconnects, o-rings, and silicone tubing? Can I just pop all this stuff in the pressure cooker and keep using it with other...

    Kolsch Style

I assume you were planning to lager it once it has been bottled. Gelatin at room temperature will work but it may take longer and not be as effective. I've done it as warm as 11C with success. I'd stick it in the coldest place in your house and give it a shot.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

    So I can't use a stock switch rated at DC 12V 16A on a 9V 0.3A DC power supply?

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

    Magic smoke :) Can I use a 12V switch with a 9V power source?

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I'm not sure if this was discussed earlier and I missed it, but does a switch/LED indicator being installed in a 12V circuit have to have an amperage rating less than or greater than to that of my power supply?

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

This all makes sense, pour and temperature is perfect. The only concern is if I don't pour a beer for a while the first couple ounces I get has an off, oxidized (wet cardboard) taste then everything else runs smoothly. I'm running about 7ft of Bevlex200 lines which have been recently cleaned...

Sanke vs Corny - Pressure Issues

I think Billl and Drunklejon are correct. My keezer is only running 4 or so times a day for an hour, so the in between time allows the lines and coupler to get quiet warm. This problem seems to be aggravated by the sanke being on the colder, lowers shelf. I'm going to try moving the sanke up...

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

Thanks Island Lizard. Although you've soothed the concern of my freezer dying, your statistical analysis fails to include the fact that my poor luck with electronics severely skews our bell curve towards failure. Jokes aside, what your saying makes sense. The only other concern I have is, with...

Sanke vs Corny - Pressure Issues

Both kegs were carbonated at the same level, and after a glass or two it starts pouring fine. Perhaps the D-couple is allowing the CO2 in the colder, slightly more carbonated beer to fall our of solution?

    Cleaning brew bucket lids

I was using a q-tip to clean out all the depressions around the seal. An extra long oxiclean/pbw soap will make the debris either come loose or come off altogether. You can bend the lid and stick it in the bucket to soak.

Sanke vs Corny - Pressure Issues

I'm currently running a three tap keezer with two cornies and a 5 gallon sanke. It seems that the sanke keg always produces wild beers, sputtering and filling two or more glasses with foam before it starts running properly, while the two corny kegs pour perfectly. All three kegs are on the...

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

Thanks guys, thats what I was under the impression for the dial setting. After doing a bit of appliance reading, it seems IslandLizard is bang on when he says the newer, smaller, compressors are designed to run longer but more efficiently. To follow up, I've finally got my keezer to a...

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

Thanks you two for the help. You've both provided me with valuable perspectives to look at this from. I went ahead and did the same analysis as Zepth with my keezer loaded with 2.5/3 cornies and my results are as follows: 10:00 11C 1:45 12C (Compressor On) 3:15 8C...

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

The beer temperature is around 8-9C or 47F and surprisingly doesn't change more than a degree or two no matter where I am in the cycle. I do have a computer fan going in there and I've used some caulk to completely seal the jar so it doesn't ad moisture. Like I said before, my compressor runs...

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

So we've determined that running a keezer too frequently can be damage the compressor. The analogy I was given is pedalling a bicycle - getting started is what is most exhausting and wearing. However, can anybody comment on whether running the compressor for continuous, extended periods of...

    Ensuring Keezer Longevity

Thanks Island Lizard, I just did a second test since adding another keg and it seems as though the keezer is going around 8 hours off and 1.5 on - so its only running about 4h a day. I think my nervousness of wearing out the compressor has led me too far in the opposite extreme. Do you...
