    Home Brewers Survey

Why do you do Brew, and where? I brew for the enjoyment of making my own beer styles and because I love the science involved. I do all my brewing in my 1 bedroom apartment. How did you learn about brewing, what influenced you? I learned about it from a friend, who introduced me to Charlie...

    Growing Hops

How do you keep them in the sun for only a limited amount of time? Did you build a shade structure of some sort?

    Snownami 2011 Webcam in Missouri

It wasn't gray or brown snow, right? Or worse, yellow snow? Actually surprised to hear that there was a lot of anything frozen up with the snow.

    Getting back into baseball

I would love to get back into playing baseball, but all of my years in softball leagues mean that I now expect to drink beer while playing. Probably not to good for hitting a fastball.

What Beer Was Your Point of No Return?

Sam Adams Octoberfest. Still one of the best Octoberfests made in USA as far as I am concerned. Had it for first time in 1999. My buddies & I in college used to make a ritual out of getting a case as soon as it was available every fall after that.

    Best Beer Bar in NYC?

+1 on Pony Bar. 45th & 10th Ave. Solid selection of craft beers (20 on tap at all times I think), constant rotation, and every beer is $5 (16 oz for most beers, 8 oz for high gravity). Everything is $4 at happy hour. Best deal in the city IMHO. Only problem is it is a bit out of the way...

    AG in small batches

I'm looking to start all grain brewing in my apartment, and my only equipment for mashing/boiling are a 5 gallon pot and my gas range. I have successfully done a number of partial mash recipes using the large grain-bag method and have gotten good efficiencies (>70%). I plan on adapting it to...

Dry-Hopping: Does it Matter for Bottled Batches?

I am a scientist but this is really just a guess. I think oberon is pretty much right, things mellow out over time. The compounds in the beer react with each other and with residual oxygen (there is still an ever so small amount in there). As for hops itself, the major flavor component...

Solvent/Fusel Alcohol Flavor Using Homegrown Yeast

I too work in a yeast lab (though I am pretty new to this field of biology) and would second ColoradoXJ13 in that it might be better to put a whole swab of cells directly into a liquid culture than to take just a single colony. Also I would try re-diluting the starter culture once or twice into...

    Altitude and Specific Gravity

I think many people are saying the right thing, but it's all quite confusing; jds is correct: the difference in air pressure isn't nearly enough to affect the measurable density of any water-based solution (using a homebrew hydrometer). jkarp seems correct but isn't explaining it enough. I'll...

    Beer in the shower

Which would be the better answer? I say stopping and drinking also.

using pvc piping to run beer lines into wall?

I haven't seen anything like that but I agree with your assessment, as long as it's completely sealed off then it should keep the lines nice and cold.

    floating particle phenomena

I may be way off base, but I work in a chemistry lab and I have seen similar flakes in solutions before. Turns out that they were fragments of filter papers. Did you filter the beer or maybe use paper towels at some point during the process? I know that sounds crazy but that's what they look...

    Manhattan Apartment Brewer

Thanks for all the tips and links! I think my major problem is one that others have mentioned--my crappy stove can hardly get 4 gallons to boil, not to mention what a larger batch would require. Though I guess if I went AG then it would be pretty easy to scale back on the size of the batches...

    Manhattan Apartment Brewer

Hi All, I have been brewing for a few months now and just found this place--so far I have gotten a lot of really helpful information! I have done about 6 extract batches to this point...I want to eventually get to AG but I live in an apartment in Manhattan and I don't have the...
