Visiting Wisconsin - What beers to try?

New Glarus Staghorn Yes to the Belgian Red Central Waters Stout Ale Asylum has some good beer. Hopalicious and the Ambergeddon are decent. Their Satisfaction Jackson double IPA is out now, but I have not tried it yet. Stay away from Leinenkugels. Gorst Valley Hops sells their hops to...

    Irish Stout Ó Flannagáin Standard

I made this about two and a half weeks ago. I took a gravity reading today and tasted it, I'm pretty excited. I added an extra half pound of pale malt since this was my second BIAB batch and I wasn't sure what my efficiency was going to be. My OG was 1.052 and my current gravity (and I expect my...

worth it to do full boils?

I read the comment on the bag at Austin homebrew and it sounds like that will work. However, I've have not used either bag. I made my bag from polyester voile I purchased at bed bath and beyond, which is essentially curtain shears. Cost something like $8 to make two bags.

worth it to do full boils?

You can adjust the hop schedule, but not everyone does. If you do purchase a bigger kettle, you should consider how you will cool it down (e.g. wort chiller). I never thought I would jump to all grain, but after doing two full boil extracts I had to make the jump. You may want to research Brew...

Can this boil-off rate be right?

That's about what I get for boil off.

    Boil off

FYI, here is the excel formula: =PI()*([diameter of pot]*2.54/2)^2*0.00428/3.78541
  9. jcdouglas

    Boil off

Estimated boil off is 1.27 gallons/hour with a diameter of 14.875

    Boil off

What is the diameter of your pot? I have a spreadsheet that I downloaded (can't remember where) that estimated my boil off. I have a 15.8 inch diameter 60 quart pot, and it estimated my boil off to be 1.42 gallons/hour, which was pretty darn close. As OneHoppyGuy indicated, you will need to test...

    Priming a Tap-A-Draft

I keg using the Coors system.

    Priming a Tap-A-Draft

I won't lie, I've tried it once after 1.5 weeks and it still tasted good. It was slightly flat, so I set it to 10 psi on my regulator connected to my paintball tank, and the next day it tasted even better. Kind of a hybrid carbing between sugar and force carbing. There are a couple of ways you...

    Priming a Tap-A-Draft

I prime the way I do when I bottle and let it sit for 3 weeks. Then I put it in the fridge for at least 24 hours if not longer and drink away. Make sure you tighten the cap appropriately, I had one leak and was flat even when I used teflon tape. However, I connected a CO2 tank, regulator, and...

    BIAB with AG Recipe ?

I use Beersmith 2.0 for all my BIAB needs. Once I got my equipment profile down, and my efficiency calculated, everything is dandy. In my experience, all the AG recipes I've tried with BIAB have produced great (at least to me) beer. Just make sure all the grains can fit in the bag and pot if...

    Brew kettle help BIAB

Aluminum is fine to boil wort in. I use a 15 gallon aluminum pot that came with a lid and strainer. My beer has been tasting fine. It's also pretty light, which is nice when pouring my beer into my fermenter. I may install a spigot so I can do 10 gallon batches.

When will I know if I messed up my first brew?

I never boil my water, I top it off straight from the faucet and never had any problems. You'll be fine. In fact, buy another bucket (or carboy or better bottle) and brew another batch!

What Brew Lessons Did You Learn From Your First Batch?

Get more than one carboy/bucket/better bottle. One batch fermenting at a time is not enough! And controlling the fermenting temperature results in much better beer.

Suggestions for a good first BIAB attempt?

I spend 60 minutes at my mash temp, but some recipes call for 90 minutes. During the mash out, I turn it up to 170, turn off the burner, and cover it up with blankets for 10 minutes. Then I use a pulley, lift it up, and let it sit over the pot for 25 minutes and squeeze the bag. I've been...
