I lost a batch this past weekend due to an accident by my kids. It was fully boiled down to 5 gallons and cooled and ready to go into the carboy, and I lost it all. I'm almost through the grief (I'm at stage 4). I know I can brew again, but I still have a pint of Kolsh ale yeast starter...

The only time I've bought commercial in the past 3 months (since I started up again) is to get more bottles. Unless I either need bottles or run dry, I don't see the need. And I'm working hard on not running dry.

New question with the same topic - I don't have any dme around, can I make starter out of 3/4 cup of sugar with a pint of water?

I started using a sheet (maybe a foot long) of aluminum foil on top of the grain bed and that seems to keep the disturbance pretty small.

Why the mash at 144? isn't that too low for conversion and too high for protein stabilization? Just wondering
