    Brewing disaster

Naw, that grunt that came out of my mouth was from the depths of hell.

    Brewing disaster

Well, we're all through it now. The one thing about a kid is how quick they forget. I'll be doing this again next weekend, but won't you know it that they'll be out there again raising hell. It's really up to me to keep all that under control. Better than that, I need to figure out a...

    Brewing disaster

It's a relief to talk about it, there's so much bottled up inside (haha - another pun) I had done everything on my deck in the backyard and had just finished up with the chiller and the pot was still on the burner. It was around 8 o'clock - my first attempt at decoction (which I really think...

    Brewing disaster

Thank you - it was a 6-hour decoction mash on 14lbs of grain. I'll miss it forever.

    Brewing disaster

I lost a batch this past weekend due to an accident by my kids. It was fully boiled down to 5 gallons and cooled and ready to go into the carboy, and I lost it all. I'm almost through the grief (I'm at stage 4). I know I can brew again, but I still have a pint of Kolsh ale yeast starter...

    Would you still buy beer?

The only time I've bought commercial in the past 3 months (since I started up again) is to get more bottles. Unless I either need bottles or run dry, I don't see the need. And I'm working hard on not running dry.

Stuff getting in boil pot during the boil

Not lucky for the cat. Or the rabbit for that matter.

A lesson on using blow offs!!

I did pretty much the same thing this past weekend. I started with the Bee Cave hefeweizen mash and loaded it into my 6-1/2 gal carboy with too much water. I pitched the yeast (wyeast something or other - can't remember off the top of my head) and on Monday it was coming up through the airlock...

    "starter" when using liquid yeast

Great - thank you, the explanations made complete sense. I can juggle things to get some DME tomorrow and still be on for brewing Sunday (it's Father's day, you know) rgds - Mark

    "starter" when using liquid yeast

New question with the same topic - I don't have any dme around, can I make starter out of 3/4 cup of sugar with a pint of water?

    Straining wort instead of vorlaufing?

I started using a sheet (maybe a foot long) of aluminum foil on top of the grain bed and that seems to keep the disturbance pretty small.

    Ommegang Abbey Ale Recipe AG

Why the mash at 144? isn't that too low for conversion and too high for protein stabilization? Just wondering

    Rhizomes - anybody have any?

Timing is everything in life, ain't that the truth?

    Rhizomes - anybody have any?

If you could spare some, I'd surely appreciate it. I'll be off the air for a bit here, as I'm traveling and won't be able to log in anywhere for a few days. I'll PM you with my address and some other stuff thanks - Mark

    Rhizomes - anybody have any?

I'm in MA. You'd have to baggie them with a wet paper towel and send by mail. That would be outrageous if it worked. I'd be game - Mark

    Rhizomes - anybody have any?

I know that it's (very) late to start a bunch, but does anybody have any selection of rhizomes? I'm looking for hallertau and/or cascades, would use similar, just want to get them in this year so I can harvest next thanks - Mark

    When to rack to secondary

Ha! I just saw all the links about when to rack under this thread. I did a search before posting - honest! Seems like this question comes up quite often. I've looked at the replies - seems like the replies are all the same. Cool forum - thanks for all the info
