    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

Follow up on my batch from July 2011. I was the one that used the Zaya Rum instead of bourbon. While I had big expectations for this batch, it's just not working for me. I thought that the huge vanilla/caramel notes in the rum would transfer over nicely to a Porter, but that's not the case. The...

AHS Stone Imperial Russian Stout Kit

Thanks for the review rebl68. This is the beer that took me down the craft beer rabbit hole so I'm hoping to due it justice. I was running a normal size siphon tube out of the standard orange dual tip glass carboy top into a water jug and it almost blew that off. Time go bigger I guess.

AHS Stone Imperial Russian Stout Kit

Thought I'd start a thread on this kit since I just brewed it up last weekend and didn't see a whole lot of information out there on it. Brewed the mini mash version and overshot the OG by a few points, but I'm not too worried about that. Used a 1L yeast starter and holy Mt. Vesuvius! Blow...

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

Had one of mine after 3 months in the bottle. The rum and oak are still a little too strong at the moment and I can tell it's just not ready yet. In fact, I'm not sure it'll even be ready for Christmas. I think those of you guys who recommend letting it go a year are speaking the truth.

    Fruit Beer Tartness

The Mango's were pretty ripe and sweet, and I'm thinking that the yeast just tore through any sugars the mango's had and left the tartness in its place. I like the lactose idea Yooper...will give that a try next batch.

    Fruit Beer Tartness

Recently made a batch of Mango Blonde Ale and I'm really impressed the beer on the whole, it does pack a bit of a tartness punch that I could do without. Is this natural for all fruit beers? If so, is there a way to reduce it? I used 3 lbs of frozen mango cubes from Costco (no preservatives)...

    Mango IPA

Popped on of these open after a couple weeks in the bottle and it is the best non-kit beer I have made to date. I've only made 12 batches, so that isn't saying much, but even the wife loves it. The mangos are pretty front and center, but not over bearing and the aroma is amazing. The only issue...

    dry dock apricot blonde

Thanks for the recipe! And please do keep me posted on how it came out. I recently attempted a similar style recipe, but substituted mango's for apricot's. 4 lbs of puree and it came out incredible, but a bit tart. Cheers, Phil

    help: Imperial Russian Stout

Thanks Jeff. Did you do the AG? PM? or all extract?

    help: Imperial Russian Stout

Bumping this thread. Curious how this kit came out? I have my eye on the same kit and was wondering if it was close to the original. Cheers, Phil

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

I caved. Opened one after 2 weeks in the bottle. Good news is that it's already carbing up nicely. Bad news is that it's still way too young. The oak pretty much jumps up and hits you in the face. Back to the cellar young porter. These flavors need some more time to meld and mellow. Glad I...

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

4 weeks in the secondary, with the last 2 weeks of that on the bourbon/oak for me.

NB Bourbon Barrel Porter vs. AHB Whiskey Barrel

I think the AHB kit is fairly new so there are probably not going to be a lot of reviews on it yet. But the recipe's look fairly close to each other so I'm sure either one would be fine...err..GREAT!

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

2 weeks for me as well, but then I 2nded for 2 weeks without the oak/liquor while it was marinating, then added the oak for another 2 weeks in the 2ndary. If anything, I think it came out a little heavy on the oak....in my batch, the oak is way more present than the liquor. So, I guess it...

    AHB kalamazoo IIPA

Yep, use it on every batch I brew, but dry hopping seems to do a murky number on my home brews. I'm going to try and cold crash it for a couple of days prior to bottling to see if that clears it up a bit.

    AHB kalamazoo IIPA

Transferred this over to the secondary tonight just a touch after two weeks in the primary at 68F. Took a reading and it is now down to 1.018 (from a 1.110 OG). I'm still fairly new, but that sounds like some pretty good attenuation. This beer is huge. The sample I took tonight was incredible...

    everything will be alright

This sounds like my nights to a T. Absolute craziness until the very end of the night....when I can finally take a breath, have a homebrew and finally relax. :mug:

    NorthernBrewer Bourbon Barrel Porter

So this got bottled over the weekend. It's pretty heavy on the oak, but I'm hoping that mellows over time. The Zaya Rum is amazing in it....next time I make this I'm going to use the whole bottle. I'm also toying the idea of bumping the ABV next time as I think this beer would benefit by being a...
