    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

My apologies 3dog- re-read the thread and realized I sounded a bit harsh (gotta work on that). There isn't much presence of professional growers (guys that make a living at it) on the net. I try to help where I can - Starts are an 8 week old cutting started from a single node. I don't root in...

    Pink hops?

Somebody sold you a bill of goods. You appear to have in your possesion H. japonacus - japanese hops. (Google it) It is an invasive species and should be destroyed. No good for brewing at all. I could be wrong so find some good pics of jap hops online and compare for yourself. They have the...

    The drying of Hops

Pick those hops off asap! cut bines will transfer off flavors in the cones. Commercial harvesters want the vines stripped within about 4- 6 hours max for top quality. Also, the cone stems toughen up and become very hard to pick. go man go! you've got work to do!

do different hop strains yield different beginning bines/leaves?

All normal - more mature plants put out more lobes. Some varieties (like Cascade) will put out single lobe leaves longer than others.. no worries!

my hops are ready to pick and still spell like grass

Are you sure you have Cascades? Those pictured sure don't have the distinct classic square elongated cones of Cascade - rub some cones out in your hands; if the lupulin forms little balls it is probably Cascade. (Magnum is the only other variety I know that will do this) As for the grassy smell...

    Burned hop leaves

Dude, Your plants are suffering from extremely high salts (usually caused by too much fert.) You're petting the puppy to death. On hot days the plant is rapidly transpiring and losing water from it's leaves. The water moving upward thru the plant is carrying the salts; which acculmulates at the...

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

It's maybe too late to plant if you live in Alaska . . . I am a professional grower of hop starts and crowns and we are in full shipping mode for starts and crowns til November for Northern tier states. We shipped ME, MA, OR, PA, NY yesterday. If planted and mulched properly; fall planted hops...

    85 year old hop plant...

If you're of German descent, I think you can pretty much rule out Goldings and Fuggle , cause they are English varieties. ( A good German wouldn't be caught dead drinkin' and Englishmans beer back in the old days, and vis-a-versa) Floral tones? German? I'd be leaning toward Hallertauer, or a...

    85 year old hop plant...

Are you Dutch? German? Polish? English? Irish? What ever your hertitage is will give you a good idea of what the plant is. A lot of Fuggle was grown on homesteads in PA. Realize that Fuggle is a parent of many hops (including Cascade). Also Fuggle is cabable of surviving for years with no...

    Help identifying hops

I'd do a little research on who the previous owner was. :)
  18. Jagdad

    harvest done, now what?

I would suggest holding off on the manure until your within two to three weeks of your first killing frost. You can force the crowns out of their dormancy if fert is applied too soon. Crowns that are pushing new growth at frost do not over-winter well. All the buds that are forming for spring...

    Air dry hops

I think drying down the cones with heat drives out the mites, aphids, and other critters. Heat also drys out any fungi before they can form spores - which can really give your brew a funky taste.

    Newport information, uses, ideas, impressions?

Newport is a great variety. It was bred in Corvallis and released in 1996. It was developed with better resistance to powdery mildew to replace Galena ( the major variety used for bittering). It is high yielding (over 2200 lbs/acre) matures a bit later in the season with alphas above 13% and is...
