Some interesting first year growing observations

I think you might have more luck with hops if you apply a thick layer of mulch over the root zone. Hops actually grow best at about 85 degrees, but they dislike hot soil temps. The mulch acts like an insulating layer against the heat.

Did you grow it from seeds?

Just got my hops starters yesterday!

There are 3 places I know of that sell Plants (NOT Rhizomes). Great Lakes Hops(Michigan), Summit Labs(Colorado), And High Hops (Colorado? I can't speak for the other guys, but GLH produces certified stock year around. GLH is in the Vendor List of Homebrewtalk.

    Fall is here, what now?

Here in Michigan, we clean up all weeds and add a fresh layer of leaf compost. We sidedress the rows with a shot of potassium (which acts like antifreeze in the root system). Avoid applications of nitrogen fert. now to avoid blowing out the crown buds that are setting for next spring. All our...

    Southwest growers . . . H.L neo mexicanus

Most of the native plants are high in limolene, which discourages bugs; and the brewing profile is described as quite strong and citrusy.

    Southwest growers . . . H.L neo mexicanus

Would any one growing in the Southwest US know of a plant source for native H.L. neo mexicanus plants? I have found only one source in New Mexico, but he believes the wild plants he has collected over the past 10 years are patentable (but has no money to do it or enforce it). Being that they...

    Hop rhizome HPM

Echo Retrofit and David42 - It is more important than ever to buy stock from sources with phytosanitary certification! We don't want large commercial interests pushing for government regulations that will basically prohibit the growing of hops by home brewers.

    Does transplanting reset hop age?

B-Hoppy, I hope HBT realizes what a asset you are to this site. You should be paid . . . Great posting!

    Breakdown on Hops

greatlakeshops.com has a great visual poster/graph of the major Hops bittering and oils - It takes all those numbers and percentages and makes sense out of them. It displays them compared to one another - Simple! (Found it on London Amateur brewers site)

    Aphids in harvested hops

Hey, LOL I know protein in water makes it foamy - Maybe all that extra aphid "protein" will put an awesome head on your brew! And the aphid honeydew should sweeten it a bit! :) I love threads like this one! LOL

    Southern California First Time Grower

SoCal FTG, Thanks for posting some pics of the planting- I always wonder how the plants will look after 3 days in a box - they look good! ( Don't believe that BS about rhizomes - my gallery proves it is crap) You have a good clean start with certified plants -Grow on fellow Hophead and Welcome...

Drying hops in sunlight, a discussion.

Using a greenhouse to dry on a hot sunny day sounds good - but- the minute the sun goes down they turn into high humidity chambers. The moisture can literally condense and drip from the ceilings and walls unless you turn on a heater- and then what is the point? It might work if you directed the...

Can't Brew/Drink, Alternative Use For My Hops This Year

You mentioned no drinking - how bout smokin'? I saw a guy that was rolling custom cigars infused with hops and he sure wasn't givin' them away! Met another lady making scented candles - her husband was cutting beer bottles in half and she filled 'em with hop scented soywax- used the top half as...

    male flowers?

You didn't indicate your variety of hop, but most of the newer varities are diploid or triploid, and are sterile. Male flowers don't have viable pollen and female flowers will not accept pollination even if a viable male plant is around. So no worries unless you have an non hybrid standard like...

Drying hops in sunlight, a discussion.

The commercial guys dry them as quickly as possible with supplimental heat/forced air - the quicker the better - They have a very specific temp range and drying times. It is all very controlled so the same brewing profile is maintained over large quantities and batch to batch. Their method...

Oh why oh why did I have to find this.... (hops for sale year round)

JP - you've got the idea right! I have plants available year-around because southern states can plant them year around and we can export to other countries. I am a commercial grower of certified stock and this ebay thing is a type of marketing test that helps me determine if there is enough...

Some advice on when to replant cuttings?

My two cent opinion is hops always do better out than in. It must be awhile before you get a killing frost down there - just give em a little blanket of mulch for insurance.

    Canadian Redvine

CRV grows like an animal but it has a very high cohumlone level (47%), which makes a very harsh beer after-taste; you either like it or hate it. The story behind it is : French Quebec origin; mixed into lower yielding cluster fields out west to boost yields / acre (pretty sneaky huh) since large...

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

No, I would stick with the bottle method if it is working for you. I"ve got to do 15m starts over the next two weeks and I can't find that many empty bottles:). I don't prop in soil because is isn't sterile - I use a special rooting plug system with peroxide/ peracetic acid. They resemble little...

Oh why oh why did I have to find this.... (hops for sale year round)

Guys - it doesn't matter when you order cause the plants are growing as you speak - they just keep getting beefier. Fall planting does typically give you a head start. I don't advocate trying to keep a hop inside over the winter - they do better in our greenhouses. Check out my gallery pics and...
