    hop plants vs rhizomes

Not to start a claymation death match or anything....:rockin: just the facts . . . GLH is a propagator that primarily supplies commercial hopyards. They grow certified planting stock. (Are rhizomes certified? no) They do not grow Raspberry,Currants, ETC. Their field grade plants are not...

    beginner hop varieties?

Pappers is right on - Cascade is probably one of the best all around hops for ease of growing and range of brews.

    Where's American craft brewing heading?

Maybe this isn't quite on topic with hop growing, but I figure we all need something to discuss besides spring preorders or we'll go crazy;) - So-o-o-o where do you all think craft brewing is heading over the next 5 years? IMHO, I think the next push is going to be in the area of...

    Hop Breeding Overview

We all chitter about the "one that got away"- and ignore all the other fish in the lake!:D I agree that plant patents are a touchy subject, but they do expire- I would guess that 10 years (or sooner) from now Simcoe, Citra, Summit, Amarillo, etc. will be as available as Cascade. Patience . ...
  8. A pic of rhizome formation on dormant hop crowns. Rhizomes are not roots! They are an underground "stem" that grows from the mother plant and sends up shoots. they are easy to tell from roots because they thave a hooked growing tip.

  9. A pic at Great Lakes Hops of dormant crowns being staged for propagation. They will be forced out of dormancy with heat and lighting. This is how we produce plants year-around. Pic taken Late November.

    Japanese Beetle Report

It may sound odd, but I thought reviving this thread makes sense because fall is the best time to treat the soil for Jap beetle grubs. Most people only get concerned when they see the adults in June, but in reality the grubs are chewing the crap out of the roots now til summer. Just a friendly...

    Variety suggestions for SEPA?

SEPA used to be a major hop growing area until aphid and mildew problems drove the industry west. Imho, I would stick with newer hybrid varieties because they have better mildew resistance than the old nobles. Varieties with dark green leaves (like Chinook and Nugget) seem to have better...

    Great Lake Hops

Here's a pic of what GLH ships- all commercial grade certified plants. Hope this helps. The plants are sold according to maturity - not size. The hop start is about 1 month old, field grade 2-3 months old, crown 4 months minimum. GLH produces hop plants year-around, and plants are usually...

What to do with container hops for winter?

How big are the containers? A handy trick I've used is to put the container in a white Hefty garbage sack and stuff it with leaves. It is not the cold that freaks them out- it more the rapid freeze -thaw-freeze- thaw cycles that exposed containers go thru. The leaves act like insulation and...

    growing hops in VA?

Check out www.greatlakeshops.com. There is a ton of good information on selecting, growing, fertilizing, etc. - look under "Docs". The plants are a heckofalot bigger than HH's and cost less too.

    How many pounds of hops?

Clarno- please give us an average yield per acre, per variety, and how many plants per acre. It is not about how big you are, but about who has the best yields per variety . . . If I could hazard a guess - About 100 -120 acres? About 1500-1600#/ acre? Divide by 1200 plants per acre = 1.3#...

Yellow trichomes on underside of leaves?

IMHO I would be more inclined to class it as a form of plant oedema. It appears to be crystallized sap the is extruded from stomata and other cells. It is pretty common and seems to be caused by water / humidity conditions. In any case it is very common and nothing to worry about.
