Bought the wrong yeast, WYeast 1007 for an IPA?

So, I stopped by my LHBS on my way home and grabbed the Brewer's Best IPA kit along with a few other goodies. I decided I'd use a WYeast Activator Pack as I didn't realize it came with yeast. Got home and realized I bought German Ale 1007 on accident. Would this be a good yeast to use for an...

    Fridge controls for lagering

Do this!! I built one recently, not hard to do, and fairly inexpensive. Gives you complete control over the temp! https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/ebay-aquarium-temp-controller-build-163849/

what should every brewer have on hand?

I'm getting ready to place an order at morebeer for an IPA kit. I get free shipping if I spend over $59 so I plan to purchase a few extra items... What things should I always have a little extra of on hand that will keep fairly well? Light DME? Dry yeast? Priming sugar? What would you buy?

    Instant actuvity in airlock

Many things cold make the airlock start bubbling, temperature changes, pressure changes, air working itself out, ect. As duboman said, no fermentation should be started at that point!

    1st brew

Sounds like you probably hit the nail on the head... Unless you forgot an ingredient an extract kit would not likely be that far off... Have Fun and Welcome from another newcomer!

    Good OG

Sounds like it is likely too late to adjust your OG at this point (assuming that OG you posted was a reading you took of your wort). You would need to raise it to obtain a higher ABV in the end, basically more sugar in the wort. If you post the recipe you are brewing im sure plenty of people...

    Wort/Boil Qty

Boil off rate is generally said to be 1 gallon per hour, lots of factors can go into this but with a 10 gallon pot I would see more than that could be likely. More surface area of water boiling would cause greater evaporation rates. It seems as though if you have the space to boil the full 5...

    Extract brew off flavors

Rather new here myself as well. From what I have gathered I would be concerned about moving to a secondary that soon, especially if you are planing to bottle your beer. If fermentation is not complete when moving to the secondary, you have a potential for bottle bombs. When you add your priming...

    Fermenting in a bottling bucket?

I think the turb disruption they were speaking of was trying to mix in priming sugar evenly without disturbing the turb. With the drops you don't have to worry about any of that, just pour it to the bottle and use a drop for even priming of bottles.

    Fermentation

That is exactly what I'm starting to think... 25518- Just follow advice as given, once you buy a kit and follow the instructions, get back with us if you have issues...

    Fermentation

You need to order an actual kit and follow the instructions. As others have said, you have way to little sugar in the batch for the yeast to work. Order a true kit from MWS or some other site. The kit will likely cost $30-$40 but is much cheaper than trying to purchase individual ingredients...

    Fermentation

I'm very new to brewing as well, and not trying to be an expert, but you definitely need to slow down a bit. I'm confused about a few things with your process and your measurements. 1. How are you figuring your ABU is 0%? Measurements for alcohol content are taken by using a hydrometer to...

    Is this infected, or normal?

I've read a lot about the secondary and no secondary, and the main reasons I would like to secondary are not for the actual benefits of the secondary, but to be able to view what takes place for future batches. I know there are extra risks and extra room for error with the secondary, but I think...

    Is this infected, or normal?

Thanks for the responses everyone! The recipe is MWS Irish Red Ale with Dry Yeast... I have touched it once since I put it in the chamber, and it was to get this gravity reading, so I don't feel like I have been "Messing with it" for no purpose... I plan to put it into a secondary for a few...

    Is this infected, or normal?

I'm brewing my first batch, an Irish Red. Went into Fermenter Last Thursday, 5 days ago... The airlock went crazy for about 2 days, had consistent temp of fermentation chamber at 64*, between 2nd and 3rd day the A/C blew the fuse and it was 74* when I found out... I went to take my first...

    First Batch Quesiton, Broken Hydrometer.

On Thursday 8/16 I began my first batch. While cleaning and sanitizing my equipment I broken my hydrometer... (I knew they were fragile, but didn't expect to break it before I even began!) So I have no reading from the start and no way to get a reading now. Beer I'm brewing is the Irish Red...
