New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Yes - underpitch it for more esters, IF that is what you want. For these beers - folks usually want more esters. The standard starter rate of 0.75-1.0MM/mL will produce a "cleaner" ester profile - so it is advised in many other beer styles but usually not this one. The other aspect to drive...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

My bad I screenshot Beersmith. I will post Brun Water info tomorrow. Every water calculator I have used always calculates the CL much lower than Brun water - Brun water is around 160 ppm - dont remember hardness. I suggest you try underpitching the yeast. The difference is noticeable. I use...

Similar journey to you and same inspiration (TH Green). I will share the “elevations” I have experienced in no particular order that I learned after 47 NEIPA batches --- spoiler: water wasn't a significant one #1 without question was yeast. Strain, fermentation temp, pitch rate - all have...

Yes - extended beers but not “head to head trial”. Browning after one day. Taste is very oxidized No - fining agents on NEIPa

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

No rousing. Pungency - on par with usual. 1.5-1.75oz/gal dryhop 93% 2 row 5% flaked wheat 2% honey malt Faster drinkable? Not sure what you are asking. It is 6.2% -still fresh in keg. Taste / smell - I could tell it had oxidized but did not seem as bad as I would have expected after six...

I agree it is likely polyphenols in solution that caUsing the browning oxidation. I too do all LODO cold side, but What I (think) learned this go round is that the EXTENDED contact time with hops = more Oxidation due to excess polyphenols extracted. Here is the beer I brewed recently - soft...

    cashmere hops

I have four ounces of cashmere too but I don’t like single hop beers - what do you all think about this combo for a “pina colada” ipa - with amounts based on hop potency. 3 parts Cashmere - coconut 2 parts Denali - pineapple 1 part Sabro- coconut

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Interesting thing occurred. While test out my new toy, I sacrificed from “fresh” (from sealed freezer bag) 2017 hops that I did not care for. Add the 9oz hops to a jar mixed with just plain tap water. I set the jar aside and a few days later I was shocked to see it look like this: The...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Speidel - I have had it up to 27PSI before testing pressure. Yes it bulges and swells but it never leaked. I have the 20lb spring in the PRV at top. Norcal had similar results testing these. I ferment inside a converted minifridge so the bulge doesnt bother anything. It is the yeast...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

My go to yeast for testing Hops. Doing it “low” will produce subtle esters that not overshadow hops like 1318 does. 64* - four days (almost always hit FG) 68* - two days 70* - two days 58* - three days, add dry hops on second day Cold crash. If you want the esters start at 70*-72* - hold for 8...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Not necessarily - my new toy (yeast harvester) from NorCal enabled me to add dryhops to carbed beer with no O2 exposure. Of course you need the right set up to make this work. Dry hop added to spunded (15lbs) NEIPA. I did lower pressure a bit so I could push the dry hop back in to fermentor.

    FOUND!!! X331 Hops (Strata)

Second this. I emailed Jim with Indie Hops in October ‘18 he said there is plenty of Strata this year to meet contracts and have some left for resellers. He said to keep checking YVH, Farmhouse, and HopHeaven. My experience above is for whirlpool only. I have not done Dryhop only yet with...

    FOUND!!! X331 Hops (Strata)

Report back - this year's batch is not as good as last year's (terrioir?? weather??). https://learn.kegerator.com/strata-hops/ The description from here is spot on in my experience. I went through 5lbs of 2017 harvest. The 2018 harvest that I got from HopHeaven has more pronounced dank...

***NEW PRODUCT*** The Yeast Brink from Nor Cal Brewing Solutions

I do not own the yeast brink nor do I own a conical - HOWEVER I do own a Jaybird modded Speidel fermentor and the yeast harvester this yeast brink is based off of. I asked a question earlier in the thread about using these to mimic the yeast brink advertised here (dry hopping specifically)- it...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

There is some discussion on high temp dry hopping on the Milk The Funk Facebook page - gotta join the group to see it. Nothing earth shattering though - basically higher heat = greater/faster extraction, so don't need as long of contact time. My experience: I have done three Hornidal...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

In my opinion, this was the main source of your problem: ".... I won't be transferring all that green matter to the fermenter." 1.) This is why I prefer the traditional dry hop after FG. If you soft crash to drop the yeast first, supposedly they won't strip the hop oils as much according to...
