    Heatstick = awesome!

I brew in a bag, and I can bring 8 gallons to mashing temps in under 30 minutes. After mashing it takes under 30 minutes to bring it to a boil. My pot is wrapped in reflectix which helps a lot.

Are there any kind of bottles I can freeze and drop in the wort without concerns?

I am planning to mess around with small batches, and my wort chiller won't fit into my pot. An ice-batch is not really an option for me either. There are a lot of people asking about using water filled and frozen soda bottles, and everyone always says that it's not a good idea because...

Cheap way to deal with all the steam in the kitchen?

I brew on my electric stove with a help of the heatstick. The vent is a part of the microwave that sits above the stove, and it doesn't work very well. As a matter of fact, it died last night from too much steam. Thankfully, it ended up coming back to life a few hours later. While vent was...

What for a First DIY project

A heatstick. It allowed me to do a full boil BIAB in the kitchen.

    Belgian **** - Belgian IPA

Looks tasty. Hope you don't mind some questions If I am doing brew in a bag, should I do something different? Will it be OK to let this sit in primary for 2 weeks? I'll be leaving on vacation 7 days after making this.

Is 36 hours on a stirplate enough for a starter?

I was intending to use that pitching rate calculator. Now I just need to find a belgian IPA recipe.

Is 36 hours on a stirplate enough for a starter?

I was wondering about just pitching two vials directly without making a starter.

Is 36 hours on a stirplate enough for a starter?

Thank you! Just wanted to make sure.

Is 36 hours on a stirplate enough for a starter?

A friend will be joining me for a brew day, and I am not prepared. If I make a starter Thursday night, will it be ready for pitching by Saturday afternoon? I am not planning to make anything over with OG over 1.060. Should I use dry yeast or two vials of liquid instead of a starter?

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

Yeah, I didn't really understand that part. I actually bought that same controller from eBay, but it never arrived. Most likley it was stolen from my doorstep :( The seller is nice enough to resend it, so I'll be building this one as well.

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

After reading the manual a lot more carefully, it seems that I just bought the wrong thing. This one will only support heating.

Is it normal for the heating element to get dirty?

Thank you for the picture. This is exactly what mine looked like. And yeah, it cleaned really fast.

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

Can you please elaborate? What specs am I looking at? Because of the acronyms I can't google my way out of this.

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

Can't I attach a temperature probe to it?

Bought a temperature controller without a probe

I purchased the MYPIN TA4 Temperature Controller without reading the description too carefully. Only after I received it, I realized that it doesn't have a temperature probe. I have no idea what to do at this point.

Thank you for the fast reply.

Is it normal for the heating element to get dirty?

I used a heat stick in my last brew, and noticed that the heating element was covered in gunk after I took it out. It looked like rust, but I am guessing it's hot break and hop debris. I was able to wipe it pretty easily using some bar keeper's friend. Is that normal?

    1500 vs 1000 watt heatstick

When I first tested the heatstick, it took over 2 hours to bring 6 gallons of water to a boil. I wrapped my kettle in reflectix, covered it with a lid and use my stove's burner to speed up the process. Got 6 gallons to a boil in just over an hour.

    1500 vs 1000 watt heatstick

I replaced it without any problems. The only tricky part was figuring out "line" and "load", but the instructions were very clear on how to do that. Haven't tripped it yet, so the stick is well sealed.

    1500 vs 1000 watt heatstick

So, it's been more than a week, but no need to call 911. The heatstick works! On the first test, there was a leak I spotted right away, without even plugging it in. I ended up picking up some kind of plumber putty from Home Depot that was potable water safe and could withstand up to 250F. I...
