Oh what a difference the crush makes

In Columbus, OH. There are pretty much only two LHBS choices. One place has the worst diy grain mill I have ever seen - you have to run it through at least twice. The other place uses a modified coffee grinder. This "other place" is a bit more expensive on the grains, but it's worth every...

    Magnetism and DIY Stirplate

Well technically I meant the Lorentz force plus Lenz's Law - but yeah, eddy currents all day. ;) EDIT: btw, I love it when there's videos! DOPPLE-EDIT: I noticed the same effect when I was sliding some N55 RE magnets on a pure sheet of copper and how much more they "stuck" to the copper. I...

    Magnetism and DIY Stirplate

I am making a stirplate myself. I was very frustrated at first with all the issues of throwing the magnets. I am using a 15v laptop supply, and before anyone yells at me for using too much voltage there's a reason. Since my divorce, I don't have stockpiles of old computers laying around, so...

    Oktoberfest concerns...

Yeah that sounds exactly like Bavarian men. Losers.

If juice doesnt say "No preservatives" does that mean it contains them? Slow growth?

In this case the ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is the preservative. It rapidly oxidizes and is considered an anti-oxidant. Ascorbic acid can cause yeast to produce ethyl acetate compounds which smells like turpentine, but other than that it should not interfere with the (re)production of yeast...

another leak. where can i get this part. its an antique.

That's a tough one. It looks like a standard beer nut size, except the that the through-hole seems much smaller. I bet you tried to use a beer nut from a sankey tap right? anyway, I would bet those are going to have to be custom made. I bet it won't be that expensive tho, as probably a CNC...

    Altitude and Specific Gravity

It certainly can make a difference. Specifically with the floating hydrometers. Firstly, specific gravity is a relative measurement. Normally, because the density of water varies with temperature and pressure, the relative point of 1.0000 is usually referred to the density of water at 4°C...

    Mash PH

I bought an electronic PH meter at a local fish tank shop for $35 new. They had loads. They are usually $30-$50 with plenty of accuracy.

    Leinenkugel's Fireside Nut Brown

Yeah, so I guess my beer prowess is total garbage compared to you guys. I thought that the fireside was the best of the slew of winter beers out right now. *.winterwarmer = teh sucks.

    Pitch yeast when priming?

Seriously. You've gotta learn the hydrometer. It's really not hard at all. I'm a girl and even I can do it. You pretty much CANNOT solve any fermentation problem without measuring OG. You've gotta get another right away - or you can have fizzled out beer.

    Mash Ratio

I think that it really depends on the style; I use 1.1qts/lb for English Ales and 1.6 when I am making pilsners/german lagers. I think that it's often overlooked.

    Sanitizer Question....

Ahh Revvy, yes you do speak the wisdom. There's no way that that sanitizer could have killed my beer. There was probably more in the fermenter than what squirted inside. I am just paranoid because its for a competition here and it needs to be perfect, and already it's going out of my control...

    Sanitizer Question....

Thanks for the links, I've read those they are great advice. But the reason I decided to post is that the gravity has been constant for four days at 1018 not even a blip... and it was really really going before I moved it, it started at 1048 and was falling steadily (like nice and aggressive...

    Sanitizer Question....

So, I hate to have my first post be an obvious kinda noob one, (Hello all BTW I have been lurking here for years) but I thought this would be the perfect thread. So I just switched to OneStep (I know it sucks, but I got 2lbs for free) and I put it in some solution into my airlock (as I...
