    Partial Mash Clarification

Hey Everyone, I'm getting ready to start my next batch and it will be my first partial mash. I've been reading up on the technique and just wanted to make sure I had everything in line. I'm planning on putting my grain (2.25 2-row, .5 crystal) into a bag and adding it to 4 gallons of 155...

I had an excellent IPA today...

Nice! I've been on a serious IPA kick the last few weeks and have tried a few pretty good ones. I love the Stone IPA (which is on tap at D Note, Arvada). I heard a lot of great things about the Avery IPA, but did not like it as much as the Stone. After all the talk about the Stone Ruination...

    My first Brew...

11:33...Did you boil with the lid on your pot? I asked a question about this during my first batch and got lots of responsesabout how important it is to boil the wort uncovered. With it covered, (insert here) can build up and lead to some off flavors if I'm not mistaken

    Shelf life of homebrew

ive packaged up a 12 pack of all of my batches o beer so far and tucked them away in the basement so I can forget about them and let them age. What is the general shelf life of home brew? When should I crack these babies and taste a fully aged, not getting any better homebrew? Does the beer...

    beer kit

Almost identical to the first kit I got myself last November. It has served me well so far for four batches. You can get by with just what is in the kit, but I would suggest you pick up a bottle of Star San sanitizer and toss that other stuff. Star San is much easier to use and a lot less...

    Bottling/Carbing a Cider

I would think the variance on FG for Cider is as great as it is for beer, but what do you guys think an appropriate FG would be with an IG as high as my 1.088?

    Bottling/Carbing a Cider

Hi All, My first cider has been in the primary for two weeks now and I am starting to think about the bottling process. This is a sweet cider that was made with four gallons of apple cider and almost 4 pounds of brown sugar. (Had an IG = 1.088) I plan on leaving in the primary for two more...

    Siphoning a spiced beer

Newbie brewer here. I bottled a holiday spiced ale on friday and what a miserable experience it was. I kept getting bits of orange peel stuck in the tubing going from fermenter to bottling bucket and the siphon would all but stop. I would have to break the siphon and let the back pressure...

    When doubling a recipe....

When doubling or trippling a recipe, do you need/want to double the yeast? I am brewing my first cider this weekend and am in the process of getting all the ingredients around. The recipe I have is for 1.5 gallons of cider using 1 packet of Safale S-05 yeast. I am planning on making 3-4...

    BB Bold Series Holiday ale

As a true beginner take this for what is worth... I brewed the BB holiday ale this afternoon for my 2nd career batch. I dont know what MAIL Malt Extract is, but I did add both the liquid malt extract as well as the dried. I added the liquid first and then the dried. Everything seemed to go...

    2nd Batch Boil has Begun

Thanks. I am doing a partial boil and I only have 15 minutes left boil time. Next time I'll get those gallon jugs in the freezer, but for now Ill just have to try and follow that proceedure without the cold gallon jugs.

    2nd Batch Boil has Begun

Thank you! That is what I thought and have been doing. Do most people dump the hot wort into the fermenter and then cool or do you cool the boil pot with wort inside and then transfer to fermenter? Sorry for the onslought on noob questions, but the directions on the Brewers Best kit are...

    Steeping Grains

Good I was hoping that would be OK. My other noob issue is that I can't seem to get the hop smell out of my primary fermentation bucket. I washed with soap was water, sanitized, and soaked it in a water/vinegar solution for a few hours and it still smells fantastic. Is this normal and OK...

    Steeping Grains

Hey Everyone, I am going to start my second career batch tomorrow and had a simple question about steeping grains. The recipe says to steep 24oz crushed crystal malt, 4 oz crushed chocolate, and 4 oz black patent. I only have one of those cheese cloth-like bags for steeping and am wondering...
