Cleaned my ball valves, have you?

Cleaned out my MLT and Boil Kettle ball valves last night. I do run hot water/PBW through the whole system after a brew day but I thought it was time to get inside and clean them. Both had bits of various things locked in the threads and little hiding places. Just a little PSA for those...

    Kolsch Recipe Suggestions

After reading more current literature and some experimentation I only boil Pils for 60 mins now. I have never had any issues with DMS off flavours. @Brulosopher tested this with a 30min vs 90min boil. http://brulosophy.com/2015/09/14/boil-length-pt-2-pilsner-malt-exbeeriment-results/

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

Bought the Honeywell Personal Heater today since I saw it on sale. It has two settings low 170 watts and high 250 watts, and a little fan which as @FuzzeWuzze mentioned is perfect for circulation in the chamber. Tried it out at the low setting for a while and it really doesn't get that hot at...

    Kolsch Recipe Suggestions

This was my last Kolsch, enjoyed by myself and many others. I was testing a split batch between the two popular Kölsch yeasts. No one was able to tell the difference between the yeasts. I really enjoyed both versions and could never correctly tell the difference. Brew Method: All Grain...

    Travel in Vancouver

Wow congrats on the epic necro thread post! I am not sure I would recommend Granville Island Brewery anymore (the island is great, some interesting things to see and do) since it was bought by Molson Coors in 2009. The craft beer scene in Vancouver is growing and changing quickly with so many...

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

Thanks for the info, thats not too bad really. Though I think I would like a little warmer for some ale ferments and even warmer for doing Saisons. I will keep that in mind and not go too high in watts if I go the ceramic infrared bulb route though. Input much appreciated.

what are you guys using for heating in your chambers

Researching the same thing as well right now. Leaning towards personal heaters since I do not yet believe that the heat pads/wraps will bring my chest freezer to a reasonable temperature with it being 0C (32F) and lower outside right now. The other option I was looking at is the ceramic (non...

    Mill speed/husk shredding/efficiency/astringency discussion

Another experiment here that I would like to see would be grain conditioning since it should allow for a balance between a nice fine crush while leaving the husks more intact. Is lautering efficiency the only reason people condition grains or do astringency issues come into play as well?

Coleman 52 quart conversion to mash tun

I use that same cooler as my mash tun, picked up this kit to complete it. https://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3-pc-ss-weldless-bazooka-kit Its quite a thick walled cooler so I had to make sure to get the larger bulkhead. If I did it again I would look into the bag...

16 minutes to chill 11 gallons

Great time! My last outdoor brew in Sept was also 16 minutes for 11 gallons of Kolsch. That was 208F to 74F using a 50' stainless steel immersion chiller. Did not record the ground water temp sadly, but I suspect it would even faster right now since it was -5 outside today.
