    Home brewing in Japan

Tektonjp, My bad. :smack:You are absolutely correct. Single phase is the correct term for standard japanese house wiring. Yes, you are right that mistakes with electricity can get you killed. I am always super careful to ground everything and to check everything with a volt meter before...

Brendan, Could you post a picture of your hops set up? So your hops are now in full sun? Are you worried about them getting too much sun? What are you fertilizing with? How about pests and the like? GB

Fencdar, How is the fermenter working? What are your radiators from? Made any further updates modifications? It's given me some ideas about my own fermenting chamber- I was planning on using a window air conditioner for cooling, but now I see the benefit of having more than one fermenting...

Fencdar, I can take some photos, but the setup is pretty ghetto. A simple solution is to buy a 200v water heater element off of Amazon.com (which is what I did for my bigger 60L brew kettle. Shipping is a bit silly but it works almost as well as the heater element from the coffee maker...

No action on my plants yet this spring and I'm down in Kyushu. They grew pretty well last year, got 4 small cones on the Centential. But this is only their second year so I'm afraid I won't have any cuttings available yet. Next year perhaps. GB

I second most of what tektonjp said with the following caveats: 1) Go for SS, but I recommend looking at Yahoo Auction for a cheap SS pot. 2) 25L is about perfect if you are using the kitchen stove- anything bigger than 30L and you are kind of over loading it (weight and power). However...

I also now brew electric. I started on an industrial gas ring, then migrated to the IH range in the new house, but it was underpowered. So then I bought an old industrial coffee maker off of Yahoo auctions, took it apart, rewired the heater from 3 phase to 2 phase and use that. I then took the...

Blue Frog, What ever it is I'll have what you've been having:fro: Ibusuki is at the other end of Kyushu. I'm at the North western end Ibusuki is south- about 5 hours drive. My Magnum is now growing like it's been shot out of a 47 um, er... The main bine is well over 2 meters tall...

Agreed, Temperature control is something to worry about, but since I don't have a fermentation chamber yet I can rig something up. I was thinking you could build a fermentation chamber with a wall to hang it on. All I know is that floor space is at a premium in my closet where all my beer...

Blue Frog, I'm in Dazaifu, just 20 mins south of Fukuoka. How about you? The conicals look interesting, and at less than a C-note each they are affordable. I'd love to use stainless, but unless I come across a stainless fermenter in the scrap yard it is hard to see how I'll end up with...

Blue Frog you were wanting an update on the hops OB provided: No pictures yet (I'll try and take a couple tomorrow). Both my Centennial and Magnum have put out one pretty good bine each, the Magnum has a second smaller bine that I'll keep going, the Centennial has an additional 2 small...

Hey everyone, I was thinking about putting an order in for FastFerment Conicals you can check them out at FastFerment.com Does anyone have any experience with this product? They look pretty cool, and appear pretty suitable for Japan as they hang off the wall. I also like the bulb for...

From Wikipedia: Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid that has a mild saline taste. It is produced by fermentation of a sugar source, such as corn or beets, and then, by neutralizing the resulting lactic acid[3] to create a compound having the formula NaC3H5O3 Usage: As a food...

Fencdar, I'm up for throwing in on a group buy. If we buy different varieties in a year or two we may be able to share:ban:. However as I'm in Kyushu I'll need the most heat hardy varieties to ensure they survive the warm summers. Centennial and Cascade spring to mind... GB

Brendan, Is this a complete list? I really can't believe that Suntory is using only one variety of hops =8-0 Suntory Premium Malt tastes like more than that- but maybe it's just the difference between dry hopping and no dry hopping. I love the hop nose of Premium when it's fresh...

    Home brewing in Japan

Fencdar, I'd love to get to the Baird Brewery, but it's a bit of a hike from Kyushu. I too brewed for (50L of draft) for my University's year end party. The apple cider went really fast as did the Citra SMaSH, the Northern Brewer SMaSH was less popular. It tasted a bit oxidized- hard to...

OppamaBrendan Thanks for considering me as a potential adhoptive parent :-) I'm going to check with an acquaintance who is a professional gardener to see what varieties are available. Fencdar I may well be up for splitting an order- depending on what I can buy/ scrounge up here.
