    Yeast nutrient?

I'm not brewing with the bread yeast. I boiled them with the raisins to kill them. Since most nutrients contain yeast hulls, I thought I would provide some also. The yeast I am brewing with is Lavin 212. Thanks for the heads up on not needing to chop up the raisins.

    Yeast nutrient?

Been reading and have a question. I know nutrient is cheap, but I'm trying to go a'natural. What would be a good home made nutrient? I am making a Apple cider and did 2 things. I boiled 2 table spoons of bread yeast and about 50 raisins chopped up and boiled them for about 5 min. The cider...

    Testing gravity.

Did not think to use a baster. Thanks for the idea. Probably use it when I back sweeten with concentrate also.

    Noob question on racking.

So, bottled the cycer. Not something I would want to give out as a gift. Stuff was hot as raw garlic and sweet enough to make you diabetic. Had good flavor, but as one of my friends described it best as a girly shot. Making a batch of cider now from the same brand of juice and some Lavin...

    Testing gravity.

Hello all, I am making my second batch of cider. So far since I am a noob, I am only making 1 gallon batches. For those of you that make 1 gallon batches, how do you test your gravity? I since I am making so little, I don't want to take a cylinder full out just to dump after reading. My...

    Red currant mead.

So, seen a couple recipes out there for currant mead. I have 3 cups of red currants ready to be fermented. Fresh from my bush, cleaned and frozen twice. So, I was wondering if anybody in the forum had made a currant mead, and if so, straight red currant or add another flavor?

    Noob question on racking.

Well first batch is not coming along like I thought it would. It was a Apple cycer, 1 gallon batch with 3 lbs of honey. I did not have a hydrometer when I first started it so I don't have an og. I added some cut grapes and some boiled yeast for nutrients. For 2 weeks it bubbled like a...

    Dry ice

Lol, sounds a lot safer than my method also. Think I will give it a try tonight as I rack my mead over. First batch I have made. Hopefully it's not weed killer.

    Dry ice

So, I have heard of people putting marbles in their secondary to reduce the air at the top. I've also heard of replacing the air with C02. Anybody ever tried dry ice? Drop in a small piece and VERY loosely cap until it calms down. Just wondering since I have some sitting here.

    Aging mead in plastic.

Thank you all. I think I understood the aplicable information on wiki. Not being a chemist and new to this stuff. Seems like the reason that some people have had success and some have not is because some of the bottles have that secondary layer added. I would assume that better bottles do...

    Aging mead in plastic.

Now there is one of my points of confusion. I thought that better bottle's PET was the same as PETE. Is this incorrect? If they are the same then using a #1 soda bottle would be the same as using a mini better bottle.

    Aging mead in plastic.

A lot of the material that I have read is a bit old, so I thought I would ask. What are your thoughts on aging mead in plastic bottles? Some people say that it will oxidize in anything plastic, and others aT that PET Better Bottles are fine. Others say that if it is a #1 in the triangle it is...

    Noob question on racking.

Sounds like a plan. I'll taste it and see how dry it is. If it is not very dry, I'll just add more cider. If it is dry, I'll and honey cider. Thanks for the advice. Thaumatourge

    Noob question on racking.

Hello, New to brewing, only 1 batch currently going with one in the works. Currently I am making a cycer, and have a currant mead in prep phase. Had a question on racking. My current cycer has been brewing for 3 weeks and I am ready to rack to a secondary. Right now the Waldo Canyon...
