    Kids and brewing

I like the chalk line idea. I rarely brew around my preschoolers (3.5 & 5.5) but when i do, they know there's a hard line they can't cross. Marking it's a good idea. They do okay with not messing with the brew, but it's just *hard work* to keep an eye on them and the brew.

    "Session" IPA's - let's hear it!

I'm looking to make something in this style, and came up with this off of the "Pliny The Toddler" recipe. Bumped the hops to 1oz as that's what my local store sells ;) 5 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 50.0 % 3 lbs 8.0 oz...

    American IPA Anonymous IPA

Kegging this tonight... Keen to taste some samples just to see how it's turned out after my awful first all-grain brewday with it. [added] Sample tastes pretty good! Basic nice crisp hoppy taste to it without being overpowering and not overly bitter (which is what I was afraid of). Will get...

    I guess I am carpe-ing this diem

I did that on Monday ;) I'm at my PTO cap at work, so I need to burn days to keep earning PTO every so often. With two young kids, it's hard to brew on the weekends. A workday brewday while they're at preschool lets me concentrate on my craft & process, and relax.

First all-grain after a few weeks - funky looking infection?

Did get full boil but it took a while to cool -25 to 30 or so minutes. First time doing a full 5 gallon boil with a large half keggle-pot. What's the consequences of these proteins then?

First all-grain after a few weeks - funky looking infection?

Racked it over without any problems, left a fair amount of liquid behind to give it room - ended up with 4 gallons or so in my carboy I reckon. Looked like almost no trub on the bottom of the container compared to my normal results. Very weird.

First all-grain after a few weeks - funky looking infection?

I will say, the wort was pretty cloudy from what I remember.

First all-grain after a few weeks - funky looking infection?

WLP001. Probably fermented warm at around 72 - I just finished a ghetto fermenter for my next brew ;) I moved it from my office onto a kitchen counter this morning so I could rack it...

First all-grain after a few weeks - funky looking infection?

I did my first all-grain BIAB a few weeks ago (Anonymous IPA from HBT!). It was a bit of a brutal brew day - ran out of gas mid-boil so it was longer than normal. I'm getting ready to rack it to secondary so I can dryhop, open up the fermenter & see this...

American Pale Ale Nierra Sevada (Session SNPA Clone)

Brewing this tomorrow as my second BIAB (I've done a bunch of partials/extract). Added a pounds or so more 2 Row just to give the recipe a bit more weight according to Beersmith, but the basics as posted sound rock solid. I'm looking forward to trying it, BierMuncher!

    American IPA Anonymous IPA

Worst... Brewday... Evar... Well, not really, but it felt like it at times. First time doing a BIAB all-grain, and that process went pretty well. 7.5 gallons of water, 11 pounds of grain. My temporary voile curtain "bag" worked pretty well, but I've no clue how well I did at keeping grain from...

    American IPA Anonymous IPA

Ended up not doing this as a partial mash... Got my water on for my first ever BIAB all-grain attempt ;)

    Strong Bitter Common Room ESB

Well, it is an ESB - "bitters" aren't particularly hoppy as a style.

    Strong Bitter Common Room ESB

Kegged & on tap ;) It needs to carb, obviously, but my quick taste test (flushing the tubes, honest!) was nice - colour is a little thin/lighter than I expected, but it's got a nice straightforward classic "english bitter" taste, just like I wanted.

    Strong Bitter Common Room ESB

As I kicked my keg of Amber Ale last night, it's time to keg my CommonRoom ESB to replace it ;) Been sitting in a secondary for a week to let it clear up - tons of trub in the secondary. Looking forward to tasting it soon!

    Strong Bitter Common Room ESB

Moved this to secondary tonight to let it clear up a little (and because I don't have an empty keg yet!). FG is a little higher than I expected, 1.012. It looked nice, sample tasted a little thin, but can live with it as a session beer.

Anyone catch Sam Calagione on Martha Stewart yesterday?

"I can taste the honey" is how I heard it. As people have said, Sam is very gracious & a great ambassador.
