    Your best "secret" techniques?

For cheap burners, small brew kettles(like turkey fry pots), water coolers, etc... check with your local pawn shop. They are always negotiable with their price. BrewHerc

Thanks man, this looks pretty good.

    need help with numbers

I thankful that my basement stays at 62 degrees, That might help. I can calculate efficiency if it were just grains. The LME is what I'm not sure about as far as the efficiency numbers.

    need help with numbers

Hey Y'all, I'm a fairly new brewer and did Edworts Haus Ale. Here's what I had to do with the recipe due to boil kettle size restrictions. 4 lb 2-row 2 lb vienna .5 lb crystal 10L 1 ounce cascade at 60 .5 at 30 .25 at 15 .25 at 5 4 lb liquid malt extract at 15 min till flameout...

Glass carboy for 5g batches do i need a 6.5g carboy?

I the Complete Joy of Homebrewing, Uncle Charlie uses a 5 gallon carboy, but attaches a blow-off tube until the krausen subsides. He then attaches the ferm lock. BrewHerc

    LME swap at the LHBS

From looking at the bag o' grain sitting on the counter, there looks to be approximately half a pound or more of black patent and roasted. This will probably be some seriously dark stout! BrewHerc.

    LME swap at the LHBS

That's the kicker, it's about a 45 minute drive from the house. There are about two pounds of very dark malted barley grains. I had the LHBS substitute some of the LME for grain to do the PM. Maybe that's why he gave me the pale LME.

    LME swap at the LHBS

Howdy Ya'll, I picked up the ingredients for the Toad Spit Stout from uncle Charlies book. I didn't realize until I got home that the dude gave me pale malt extract instead of dark. Do ya'll think this is cause undue worry? I'm going for a really dark stout. What say you? BrewHerc.

    Hops removal from wort

I really like the idea of the paint strainer from Sherwin williams, also the strainer bag on the INPUT side the the cane. It seems like it would reduce aeration to nothing. I've got an auto-siphon racking cane, I'll have to try it out when I bottle this next batch. When I poured the wort from...

    Favorite Brewing Music

I like to listen to a little bluegrass band called Iron Horse. Something about listening to some downhome type of music and making beer feels right.

    Hops removal from wort

Howdy ya'll, It's been a month or so since I did my first extract kit. After doing extensive reading (after the fact). I didn't filter out the hops from the wort. How bad of a thing could this be? My next brew was a partial mash that included instructions on filtering out the hops...

First attempt at PM, missing ingredient.

My first brew didn't call for it. It was a brown ale that I bottled Sunday. It's already clear. I couldn't resist and chilled it yesterday. Upon pouring it had decent carbonation but, it tastes like it needs the required three weeks to further condition. It was good but real hoppy. I...

First attempt at PM, missing ingredient.

Howdy Ya'll, I'm giving the ole partial mash a try tomorrow. It's gonna be a Sierra Nevada pale ale type of beer. The recipe calls for 1 tsp. of Irish moss. The LHBS neglected to include this when I picked up the ingredients. What will happen if I go ahead and brew it up without the Irish...

    Good God Almighty, It's ready!!!!

My little helper did say she wanted to brew some birch beer. That'll definitely be one of our future projects. BTW, we went on our first deer hunting trip this morning. Didn't see anything but had fun anyway.

    Good God Almighty, It's ready!!!!

It's a brown ale extract kit from the LHBS. We're from central Arkansas. I think the next attempt will have to be a partial mash IPA, done according to Deathbrewers method. More Primaries is definitely a must, I can see why most of you guys have so many beers going at once in your sigs.

    Good God Almighty, It's ready!!!!

Dude, she's as pumped as I am to put this stuff in a bottle. But, I couldn't pay her to take a sip, not that I would anyway. She just likes to make stuff, you ought to see her in our garden.

    Good God Almighty, It's ready!!!!

My first batch is ready to bottle. It's been in the primary for 20 days. Stable SG from the hydrometer. Man, I'm not sure if homebrewing is for me. The waiting game just kills me. I think my solution is to have more primary fermenters to have multiple batches at the same time. I took a...

Very long fermantation with first brew.

Thanks Piv, the whole patience is a virtue holds true I guess. I'll give another full week and then take another reading.

Very long fermantation with first brew.

I did move the bucket from the front of my gun safe. I guess that could have done what you said with the yeast. After reading up on some of the other threads I think I need to relax and give it time. I sure wish I had some homebrew to relax with!!

Very long fermantation with first brew.

Here's the deal, I treated myself to a TrueBrew Brown Ale kit. Everything went fine with the kit. After 7 days in the fermenter, I take a gravity reading which was 1.022. Almost no activity in the airlock. The recipe called for a 1.012-15 for FG. So I take another reading the next day and...
