    Refractometer...stupid question...

hmmm...no wort to test...yet, but I'll certainly do that when I do. My refractometer has readings 1.000 - 1.070 on one side and 0-100 in increments of 5 on the other. So, not sure how that would translate over, guess I'll find out if it does, hopefully soon.

    Refractometer...stupid question...

I have one that I used back when I have a saltwater fish tank to measure the salinity of the water. Can it be used in beer making?

    Will this recipe work?

Well, not sure to be honest. I am new to this. One of my favorite commercial brews is Bluemoon which has the orange and coriander. Not trying to make a clone but since it's a flavor profile I like, I figured using the same spices would get me something enjoyable. I also really enjoy Hoengaarden...

    Container size (initial fermentation)

Great info. I'll definitely go for the larger bucket then. Thanks everyone!

    Container size (initial fermentation)

Thanks. The buckets I saw at the shop were labeled as 5 gallon but there was easily another gallon or more above the 5 gallon marking on the side...will this work or should I get an actual marked 6 or 6.5 gallon bucket?

    Container size (initial fermentation)

Just wondering about container size. I want to try my first batch but I want to keep it a small batch, but I wouldn't mind going ahead and getting a 5 gallon bucket for future larger batches. So, can I do an initial fermentation of a 2.5 to 3 gallon batch in a 5 gallon bucket? If not, would...

    Witbier/Hefeweizen for a 1st time brewer?

So I'm thinking this: 3.3 pounds of wheat extract (60 minute boil) 1/2 pound wheat dry malt extract @ 15 mins 1/2 oz Hallertau @ 60 minutes 1/2 oz coriander @ 60 minutes? 1/2 oz orange peel (bitter or sweet?) @ 60 minutes? Weihenstephan Weizen smack pack after cool down. Going for a 2.5 to 3...

    Witbier/Hefeweizen for a 1st time brewer?

Thanks again for the info. I am getting ready to give this a go. Hoping to get it started this weekend or early next week. I think I am going to do a small batch, like 2.5 gallons to start, that way I don't really need to buy any additional equipment, I can used what I have. I guess really all...

Using an oxygen tank for welding to aerate wort

I work in the medical industry. As far as I know, there's no filter in line on a tank. Not the ones used in the field or that COPDer's haul around. It's the tank, regulator, mask/nasal cannula. In the hospital, they use filtered air in the rooms, but we also use the same tanks as in the field...

    Witbier/Hefeweizen for a 1st time brewer?

I am heading to the semi-local home brew store today to see what they have to offer. I really want to do a witbier or Hefeweizen and this will be my first time brewing beer. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a reason why a beginner shouldn't start with this style. It will be from extract...
