    Kit Assistance Please

If you use a spray bottle with the StarSan, as opposed to filling a bucket or pan and soaking, you'll get more out of a bottle spraying stuff down because you only use 1 oz of StarSan per 5 gallons of water. So one 16 oz bottle could last you awhile. I brew every other weekend, and I have only...

    Kit Assistance Please

Start off with a 1 gallon kit from Northern Brewer/Midwest/MoreBeer and determine if you actually like the hobby or not. Get not included items from your local cheap store. If you have a basic pots and pan set, that's probably more than enough for your first couple of batches. If you like the...

    Water Requirements for BIAB Brewing

I've always just gone with John Palmer's recommendation of 1.5 gallons of water per 1 pound of grain (1.5:1). Haven't had an issue yet. You can always adjust later by adding more water, boiling longer, or adding DME or sugar adjunct. The mash process doesn't require that precise of a calculation...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

It's pretty well documented on here that Ss Brewing takes care of their customers, so instead of bitching on here, why don't you just call them and ask for a replacement? Those scratches are hardly workmanship issues, they are clearly evidence of poor handling. By who is open for debate. But it...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

Didn't know carboys had default settings... :cross: I would say, given commercial brewers have been using conicals for decades, that if they don't have a problem, that you probably won't either. http://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/edible-innovations/beer4.htm

Anyone else hate the term "Brew in a Bag"

To be honest BIAB is just a cheaper way of doing a malt pipe, as used in the Speidel Braumeister brewing system. Not sure if they were the first to come up with the method, but it really is a slick way to do all grain. If actual malt pipes were available in sizes that would fit commonly used...

DIY: Weld-less Heater Element Using Cam & Groove Couplings

The main issues I have with the powerCon 32A, is one you are utilizing a live male connector (yes, I understand the live leads are protected, and that likely you will only connect/disconnect with the power off, but it is still a safety issue), and two they are not cheap at $30 per connector...

Brew Bucket by SS Brewing Technologies

I think it's crazy to bitch about the racking arm when, as already stated, you can just add a piece of silicon tube or tip the bucket. Seems to be a lot of unrealistic expectations being thrown at this product versus others. People pay a lot more for Blichmann but don't nearly gripe as much...

DIY: Weld-less Heater Element Using Cam & Groove Couplings

I think it depends on the quality of the solder joint. It is an optional step regardless. You don't even need the lugs, you could just screw down the wires under the screw terminals on the element. Crimped Terminals and solder just provide more structural strength to the electrical connection...

DIY: Weld-less Heater Element Using Cam & Groove Couplings

Ok, so my update is well overdue, sorry!! Here is the link to my DIY article (Downloadable PDF). So a couple of things with the linked article to note: I took the "weld-less" out of the name of the article because I was not able to get a good seal on the kettle with a locknut, the "F" style...

Are Pubkegs on Their Way Out?

Bookmarked. I tried the Pubkeg once but was never able to get it to seal after opening it the first time. You guys that use them, what's the trick? That said, the EV Container option is pretty interesting. Creating a waste stream for the disposable bag isn't so good, but I guess the ecological...

Basement Electric Brewing, Ventilation and Negative Pressure Downsides

I basically have the same setup as you describe. Never had an issue. Additionally if the exhaust pipe that goes into the chimney has a back draft damper on it, a negative pressure issue would cause it to close and force the fumes up the chimney. Normally this is attached perpendicular on a...

    New IPA glasses

Anything to do with senses is going to vary from one person to another, so no one can say that it does make a difference or doesn't. To some it may, to others it may not. My own personal experience, and I have bad sinus issues, is there is a noticeable difference between serving my IPA in these...
