Brew Day 1, Finally Finished (and I'm bushed).

Boiling complete. Now cool quickly to 70 degrees! I had this brilliant idea that since my stock pot would fit in my MLT, I'd just use that w/ icewater in it to cool. No joy. I mean technically it worked, just very very slowly. I mean it's really pretty brilliant and I'm sure I am the...

Brew Day 1, Finally Finished (and I'm bushed).

So the mash was in the mash tun. I drained what had been the strike water off into a clean "Ale Pail" (which is fortunately maybe 6.5 gallons). Then I added 4 gallons of the 170 degree sparge water. I was instructed to add it "gently" but quite frankly I'm not sure how you do something "gently"...

Brew Day 1, Finally Finished (and I'm bushed).

Today went pretty nicely. I got a late start because the Tour de France started today, and I gotsta watch that. So I started getting around well after noon. I made "A Well Made Tripel" from Brooklyn Brew Shop. I like these guys. UPS screwed some things up for us but BBS really hooked it up...

I am making beer Right. Now.

Thanks, thanks. Second time will be easier because I'll a) have a MUCH bigger spoon and b) have graduations for stuff like this.... Thanks!

I am making beer Right. Now.

Question. I am cooling to 70 degrees before putting in the carboy. How to transfer to the carboy? I have an "autosiphon" but the instructions say to pour through a funnel to filter into the carboy. So, what is the way? I figure this auto siphon and tube are for something (ok they are for...

I am making beer Right. Now.

Cookin' er down now. I guess I started with something like 7 gallons of extract and over an hour I'm supposed to get that down to 5 gallons with a moderate boil.... hmmm.. We'll see how that goes. Too bad my Bayou Burner Pot isn't graduated because I won't have any idea how much is 5 gal (and...

I am making beer Right. Now.

Honestly I drink beer slowly enough that I will probably still have beer from this session in a year anyway even if I don't do it purposefully. But I will, nonetheless. ;)

I am making beer Right. Now.

I'm kicking down some Guinness. Gotta have the bottles. :D Also this was the very first beer I ever had........ I'm honestly marveled at how well the bayou burner stock pot is holding the temp. I have not had to turn the burner back on yet, and I'm 30 minutes in (goal range 144-152)...

Edit to say this is my first batch.

I am making beer Right. Now.

So far it's going pretty nicely. And really it's just been moral support from the wife, no actual help needed yet. She's napping now so maybe I won't need any. O_O I am mashing in just now. Took a while to get the required amount of strike water, but just because I wanted to use the "good...

Further questions before first brew day (tomorrow).

Yeah pretty much immediately after I hit enter on that post I realized a) fermenter will be full of dead yeast, and b) I have to siphon into something because I add 1 cup of honey before bottling. So it all makes sense now. Seems since I use the cooler w/ spigot as the MLT I could just use it...

Further questions before first brew day (tomorrow).

Thanks. 2) Somehow i missed that that the Ale Pail was for bottling... isn't that one of the uses for the siphon? I thought I would bottle from the siphon. 3) I like the idea of heating on the stove and going that way, using a pot I have. we don't have any large pots but this is a very...

Further questions before first brew day (tomorrow).

    1) Yeast pack. It seems to be dry yeast... is(n't) there something I'm supposed to do with it the day before brewing? Wet it, fridge it, or whatever? 2) The kit I bought has a glass carboy and a plastic ale pail. Please note that my question avoids the "plastic vs glass": What is the ale...

Just bought kit from Brooklyn. What else do I need?

I should point out that supplies, at this point, are all purchased. And received. So it's kind of moot really to say which pot I should get, or banjo burner etc... ((though bad coffee I wish I'd seen your deal first!)). :D Basically now all that's left for me to do is screw up on brew...

Just bought kit from Brooklyn. What else do I need?

False. The turkey fryer I purchased is in fact Stainless Steel Awesomeness.

Just bought kit from Brooklyn. What else do I need?

Kit's here! Looks like brew day will be Saturday. The wife was even excited to see and touch all the new toys, which is great new. :D

Somebody please help! My taste buds are ruined!

Heh I know I said this already in another thread, but really Mississippi is way worse on beer laws. == 13.9 you guys have it made. ~6% max here, and on and on (rules). So... enjoy your 2 Hearted and Sweetwater etc..

Can anyone from Nashville or Clarksville TN help me find this beer?

Move to Mississippi and you'll be longing for those Alabama beer laws.

Just bought kit from Brooklyn. What else do I need?

Well after not having responded for a little while I'll write that off to Brooklyn Brew Shop trying to squeeze info out of UPS (who broke the package in the first place). So the broken box is on the way back to Brooklyn Brew Shop, but they decided to go ahead and replace my order, and it's been...
