    Recirculating BIAB Mash with Propane

    "No Chill" Containers

Here's what I ended up doing: I took my wort from boiling and drained into the bottling bucket. I attached my "double bubble" airlock and filled it with vodka - the thinking was that as it cooled, it would pull air in, and the vodka would kill most nasties. It would also not make the beer...

    Recirculating BIAB Mash with Propane

Hey Tob77, thanks for the shout out :) What are you using to attach the servo to the valve, shapelok ? To the OP, have you thought about automatically stirring rather than recirculating? Is there some advantage to recirculating? I found during my first foray into BIAB that the mash was so...

Any interest in starting new open source automated brewing project...for propane?

Thanks alien, tob77. I'd love to hit +- .25 degrees (F), but I'm pretty happy with where I got to yesterday +/- 1.5 degrees F. I was using a rule based system for -15 degrees of setpoint, +2 degrees of setpoint. So that narrows the band for PID control. For this go-round I only used kP set...

    6th batch Grapefruit IPA

If you're just adding zest, it won't add any bitterness. Just deliciousness and aroma. Damn, now I want to brew a grapefruit IPA!:D

    6th batch Grapefruit IPA

Widmer bros does a grapefruit IPA - not sure if it's a special one off thing, but it was really good. Good luck!

    "No Chill" Containers

Thanks madscientist those look great, but I worry about cleaning them. Do you find it challenging to clean them thoroughly ? Ideally, I don't want to buy anything else if I don't have to. I'm just trying to avoid the time sink that is chilling. That makes me think "bottling bucket", but would...

Any interest in starting new open source automated brewing project...for propane?

Thanks alien. Any thoughts on reasonable starting points for kP ? I've tried 1, 100, then 1000 , with each worse than the last. Another thought I had was to engage PID control only near the setpoint, so it doesn't over index on error early on in the cycle.

Any interest in starting new open source automated brewing project...for propane?

Just to keep folks updated, I am still working on the project, but I haven't had a lot of success tuning the PID. It turns out to be trickier than I first thought. I'm going to use a simple linear algorithm tomorrow or Sunday. Of course if someone wants to help with PID tuning params, I'm...

    "No Chill" Containers

Maybe I'm just way overthinking this - perhaps I could just use my bottling bucket/fermentor? The only problem I see with that is that it could suck in air through the hole in the lid. In which case, I could attach my airlock and fill it with some vodka so that the air would get sterilized as it...

Glass carboy with hole on top

I can't believe you guys killed the OP. That is so uncool. I had this same idea a few months back and came to the same conclusion that Denny suggests. However, there is an easy solution - just get the better bottle guys to make a carboy with a steeper "funnel" easy peasy. Who's with...

    "No Chill" Containers

I was literally just about to buy a slow chill / no chill container... But then I got to thinking : which is better a 7 gal win pack or a 6 gal brewing bucket? Win pack has a nice spigot which is convenient, but a spigot less bucket is completely sealed. And a bucket is easy to clean, too. So...

    Calling all Information Scientists

Here's an example of the term "meal" in SUMO (something-or-other Upper Merged Ontology) http://sigma-01.cim3.net:8080/sigma/Browse.jsp?kb=SUMO&lang=EnglishLanguage&flang=SUO-KIF&term=Meal and one for beer...

    Calling all Information Scientists

OH DEAR GOD, PLEASE DON"T TELL THE BJCP, OR THEY"LL BE OUT OF WORK!!!1111 :P I keed, I keed, But in seriousness, it's not impossible (or even highly improbable). With a specific enough framework, it can be done. Here's why you'd want to do it - A) because you can B) because it's there...

Ok homies, sorry it's been a while. I've been traveling for work, etc Anyhoo, I've posted version 0.1 of the code to github. https://github.com/jrubinstein/brew-PID-propane I'd love to have feedback, collaboration, etc . THANKS! :mug:

    Share your PID settings

I looked around and didn't see anything similar, so I thought I'd try to shortcut the tuning process . Would everyone care to share their PID tunings? It would also be helpful if you were to share your setup, too. Thanks brewing homies! :mug:

    Calling all Information Scientists

That's an awesome idea. You could check out SUMO (something-or-other Upper Merged Ontology) as a starting point . It's open source. I've met the originator of the project and I'll see if he's got any insight into beer ontology

Any interest in starting new open source automated brewing project...for propane?

Thanks, I was thinking of posting my code someplace (git or google code, I suppose). Ideally, I'd like people smarter than I to contribute to the code, so I guess Git is the way to go. The servo works like any other servo, but 0-180 is multiplied. So if a normal servo turns 1/2 turn with...
