    Sanitizing lots of bottles quickly

After a soak in PBW I load all of the bottles into the dishwasher and run a short wash cycle and a dry cycle. The dishwasher gets hot enough to sanitize, just make sure you aren't using any kind of soap. I can fit about 60 bottles at a time. Some people have also baked bottles in the oven to...

    Maelstrom Stir Plate Vibration

Not to go off track here, but I think it’s out of place to criticize a product in a public forum before troubleshooting or contacting the seller/manufacturer. I was researching stir plates and found this “headline”. For lazy people that don’t actually read the thread, it might steer them away...

This should be in that ghetto brew rig thread.

TIPS and TRICKS for beginning home brewers

Find a way to control fermentation temps, and join a local club if there is one available. They will give good feedback, and help you hone your processes.

    Carbonating One 12 oz Bottle

Handy piece of information to know. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a sugar cube, but the grocery store is a lot closer than the brew shop.

    Cloudy when refrigerated

A couple of hours isn't long enough for suspended yeast to drop out. Try leaving them in for a couple of days.

    Wort chiller question

I tried one for a couple brew days, but I could never get it “clean”. You can back flush and bake them all you want. I was never able to get everything out of them, and that bothered me. I live in Mississippi, so the biggest impediment to chilling has more to do with ground water temps than the...

    Backyard Brewery - Commercial Quantities

I guess you could partner up with someone who already owns the restaurant if you don’t already have one and just be the brewer. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but the attitude of the author seemed to imply that good beer (sellable beer) is very easy to make. The article makes it seem like you...

    Backyard Brewery - Commercial Quantities

Just because you want to go pro doesn’t mean you should. I wonder what the percentage of homebrew upstarts are still in business after 5 years. Sure, there are amazing success stories, but I bet for every long term success there are 10+ failures. People have been brewing beer at home for a...

    Backyard Brewery - Commercial Quantities

The problem lies in zoning and licensing. I also see nothing in this kit that involves a taproom. You will spend twice that amount getting a large enough customer base wanting your beer to get a distributor to pick it up.

    Buying pre-made?

Also check out lowes and home depot. I seem to remember seeing one for around $400 recently.

If I end up with too low of a gravity can I just boil longer?

I just keep DME on hand and add a little if I miss my numbers.

    Zero IBU IPA?

Exactly! A beer may calculate and even test out to be zero IBU, but taste is what matters and taste is dependent on the individual. You load up on flavor/aroma additions to taste the hops. The hops should be a mix of bitterness and their individual profiles. You wind up tasting what you perceive...

    Quad Cities.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm headed out in the morning for this 11 hour ride. By the time I get there I will be in a "if it's cold and it's beer give it to me" attitude. Once that period passes I will start exploring.

    Quad Cities.

Thanks, I'm going for work and usually we fly everywhere, but this past week and next week have fallen in a weird line up the I55 corridor. I was in Memphis yesterday, St. Louis today, Chicago Thursday, and the Quad Cities from Friday-Monday. The company decided to send me in my POV and...

    Price of craft beer?

It must be dependent on location for us in the states. I'm in Mississippi which is one of the strictest states as far as alcohol goes, but we hardly pay anything in taxes. Most craft beers are $7-9$/6 pack of 12 oz. The most expensive beers that are available here are still under $10/ 6 pack...

    Quad Cities.

I'm in Mississippi where you can't order beer online. I will be in Moline, IL this weekend, and I would like to know any good breweries or beers to hunt for. Thanks in advance.
