    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm brewing 5 gal of an American Pale Ale on Saturday and 5 gal of an Imperial IPA on Sunday. Using recipes from Brewing Classic Styles by Zainasheff and Palmer. The IIPA has 17 ounces of hops (including dry hop)! I'm pretty excited.

    Cold crashing

Sorry to hijack this thread 46andbrew (nice Tool reference btw), that wasn't my intention. This just happened to be a topic on my mind this past week and instead of creating a new thread... I've never used gelatin or isinglass although I have heard them many times on this forum as effective...

    Cold crashing

Will too much yeast drop out of suspension impeding bottle conditioning? I thought of cold crashing my barleywine starting tomorrow and bottling Saturday. I plan on lagering it for 12 months or so and wonder if too much yeast will drop out of suspension for bottle conditioning.

American Barleywine AG - Water Into Barleywine

I'm going to be bottling up my batch this Saturday and a wild idea came to me. I keep my fermenter's in a water bath to help maintain fermentation temperature. I was thinking of adding enough ice to the water bath to drop the temperature down into the 40s over the next few days before I bottle...

Beer style with PH of 5 or higher and low carbonation

I've tried to look into the various ph's of the different styles but I can't find any specific information. It's usually general descriptors like 'slight acidity' or 'less acidity than....' Is there a site that includes the ph ranges of different beer styles?

Beer style with PH of 5 or higher and low carbonation

A coworker of mine has bad acid reflux and thus can't drink many beers because of the unknown ph level. Do you guys know any beer styles that usually have a ph level of 5 or greater? I was thinking maybe altbier and/or saison styles. Regarding the carbonation, I imagine they can let the beer...

    Weissbier Paulaner-style Hefe Weizen

I helped a coworker brew up this beer. His first one! Instead of using 1/2 oz of the hersbrucker I planned on using the full ounce. Not like it'd totally ruin it or anything and why waste hops? Well 20 minutes into the boil I happen to look at the package and it was actually 2 ounces! My LHBS...

American Barleywine AG - Water Into Barleywine

Well, my pre-boil sample came in at 1.042. I ended up with more volume at flame out than I expected even though I lengthened the boil to 95 minutes. The final volume was 3.25 gallons. My post-boil gravity kind of reflects this as it is 1.080. I think if I had boiled off that last .75 gallons I...

American Barleywine AG - Water Into Barleywine

I'm brewing this right now! I scaled down to 2.5 gallons as my system can't support the amount of grain for 5 gallons. With mash and sparge I used 8 gallons water and collected 5. Shooting for a 75 minute boil to get it close to 2.5 gallons. Pre-boil sample is cooling and I'm curious about its...

American Barleywine AG - Water Into Barleywine

I am considering brewing this in a few weeks. My system can't handle this amount of grain so I was thinking of brewing 2 or 2.5 gallons. Maybe even one gallon. I'm curious to know how yours turned out.

Wait at least 3 weeks and you should be fine.

Have i ruined my brew with too much water?

I'm 24 batches in and some are great, a few not so much and a lot of them ain't so bad. I wouldn't recommend tossin' a batch unless it made ya hurl. My worst so far was my russian imperial stout 'Dark Night of the Soul' found in the recipes here. I didn't pitch enough yeast so after a year it...

Forgot DME... Should I use it as primer for bottling?

I second this and would repitch to make sure the extra DME is consumed.

    kiwit carbing

FWIW when I bottle i pour half the priming sugar in the bottling bucket first. Then when I hit the halfway point I pour the other half into the bottling bucket.

Why is Miller 64 being pushed so hard? Anyone try this at all?

I don't understand why they market 64 and all those other 'ultra' lite beers to athletic people. If you are running, cycling, or swimming for many hours a day the last thing you want is a 'lite' beer. You have burned a lot of calories excersing, you want to replenish them quickly. They should...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just mashed in AHS' Antwerp Pale Ale. I'm a little concerned about the yeast though. I didn't get around to brewing this up soon enough and the 'Best by' date was March 4, 2012. :/ Any thoughts on making a starter? I think I may not have enough time for one.

    Ugh, low OG.

I, too just started all grain brewing so I feel your pain. Instead of mashing in a 5 gallon stock pot, I place the nylon bag in my bottling bucket. I usually heat the strike water about ten degrees more than needed to account for temperature loss when pouring it in the bucket and then adding...
