    Boil off rates

Doesn't seem outrageously high, my pot is close to the same dimension and I boil off between 1.25 and 1.5 gal/hour
  2. M

    sparging

You really don't need software for that. I always mash at medium body (1.25 quarts per pound of grain) there is an easy formula here somewhere that will figure grain absorption, and after a few brews you can nail your boil off.

    sparging

Ok, I'm not at my house right now and can't remember the grain absorption so I'll have to estimate here but I figure you need 6qts. mash in, you should collect real close to a gallon, maybe a tad more. If you are using a smaller pot count on around 1/2 gallon of boil off for an hour. Should be...

    sparging

So what's your recipe and I might be able to help
  5. M

    sparging

It's based off how much grain you use.. If you mash in at 1.25 qt/lb then collect first runnings and see how much you need to get in sparging.

    mash tun

I fought with that issue, in my case it was the high temp silicone tubing connecting my false bottom to the spigot collapsing under the weight of the grain bed. What setup are you running? False bottom? Ss braid? Slotted manifold? What was your grain bill also?

How long until you had a beer you really liked?

Yes, absolutely.. That and pitching enough yeast will do more then you could imagine for quality of beer.

How long until you had a beer you really liked?

My first two batches were terrible, kits with bad instructions and that led to under pitching and hot fermentation. I had given up, went two years without brewing. When my brother got hurt on his motorcycle we started talking about making another beer, scoured the internet and found this...

American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

Thanks, I'm sure it was something I did. Had too many home brews when I made it and when I missed the sparge volume I didn't want to heat up more water so I stupidly covered the pot. I was so out of it I even used a healthy dose of irish moss and this turned out one of the clearest beer I have...

    Non alcohol beer

Short answer no, if you want to spend the money it might be. From my understanding you would make a normal beer and lightly heat it under vacuum to boil off the ethanol without ruining the flavor.

American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

I made this recipe in january, it has wonderful carb but no head. When I made it I missed my sparge volume so stupidly partially covered the bk to minimize boil off, resulting in a little dms. Realized this after reading a thread a few days ago, has a very noticeable coors flavor. What I'm...

    Missed my OG...

I'm still in the process of building a mill (I'm a huge diy guy and love this hobby because of all the cool stuff to build) so all my grains come from the lhbs milled and I get around 65% efficiency. Never had a batch taste watered down or strange because of that. Just do a few more and figure...

    Missed my OG...

If you only missed by 0.004 then you did a ton better then my first ag, or second or third honestly. I bet she turns out delicious once carbed. Edit. Didn't notice the 80*, so that would make a pretty big adjustment you're in great shape.

Looking fir help to build a masher?

Yeah, I'm not home right now but I believe the wiki had a parts list on it. My brain makes way more sense of a picture then a parts list but I would be happy to pm you what you need when I get home if interested.

Looking fir help to build a masher?

It's very easy, here is a pic of my old brass setup and my new ss setup. The washers are just plain fender washers except the one on the inside should be stainless. Just go to a local hardware shop to make sure they fit around the 3/8 nipple Just get a 1 1/2” nipple to go through the...

Need help fixing what I meant to do..

I would finish following the recipe. I did an amarillo citra APA that the hydro sample tasted horrid, like being punched in the mouth by a very bitter papaya. I decided I had gone this far so I might as well finish. After 6 weeks in the bottle it is wonderful. I'm actually very interested in...

Beer tastes stale even when fresh. Why?

I'm so glad I found this thread. I have an american wheat that has been bottled a little over 2 months and it has a pronounced coors original taste, figured it was something that would mellow over time but on seeing this thread it has to be what you're experiencing. I had missed my sparge...

Anyone ever hear of this? Killer prices!!

Just curious, did you go with the stainless or opt for aluminum? I have a 7 gal pot and have put off buying a bigger one until the funding is there but at these prices I wouldn't feel bad ordering, I'm just uncertain about aluminum due to durability.
