    Brew-Boss Opinions

I have only done 5 gallon batches in my 20 gallon kettle but I am now ready to go up to 10 gallons. That will be the limit for my batch size. I've been honing my procedure and checking the brews carefully, I have had a few batches I've dumped so losing 5 gallons is not as bad as losing 10. But...

    Brew-Boss Opinions

If you have the 20 gallon system like I have, you must be very aware of the size of the grain bill. I made a Brickwarmer Holiday ale today with a grain bill over 13 pounds. When I lowered the grain filled basket into 10 gallons of strike water, it did not cover the grain bed. I had to add...

YoU are correct, the square tube slides over the shorter round tube and sits on two washers that fit on the inner round tube. This lets the outer square tube rotate on the washers. Everything is powder coated so the washers slide easily over each other.

Note: If you got the 240volt system, you will need to use a 240-to-120 volt converter to plug the table into. That side is only 1 amp so you cannot plug the winch into it, use a separate plug for that. I bought the BB stand and use the HFT winch, too. I asked Darin about putting the stand on...

Mike, I've got the same setup with the Fire tablet. I find that I can plug the USB end into my laptop and see the Fire files in the BrewBoss folder. I use Beersmith for my recipes and I export the recipe as a BeerXML file type. I can then put this file onto the Fire tablet, go to the BrewBoss...

    Brew-Boss Opinions

I got the 20 gallon system last July and have been brewing 5 gallon batches. I will eventually start making 10 gallon batches when I have my processes dialed in. I figure if I screw up something, it would be less waste than dumping a 10 gallon batch. Word of warning. 5 gallon batches may leave...

    Chill Haze

One thing I've been trying out lately is to use what's called a "settling tank". After the boil, I chill the wort into a clear plastic fermenter (I use Big Mouth Bubblers) and put it into a cold fridge or my fermentation chest freezer for several hours. I can see chunks floating in the wort but...

    Chill Haze

auburntsts is right, only time and low temperature can clear this beer. That's a little more than just chill haze. What kind of yeast did you use? Wyeast 1968 London ESB yeast is a high flocculation yeast which should settle right out in the primary. A slow flocculating yeast will remain in...

    Glycol Counterflow Chiller build

No guts, no glory. I jumpered the thermostat wires together and both the fan and compressor were running.

Let me know if you get one of these so we can exchange war stories.

Thanks to all for your comments. I do have one issue I would like to resolve: the AC temperature sensor is still active and the temp control has been turned all the way to COLD. The weather has gotten much colder so the garage is way too cool now for the compressor to kick in. The fan keeps...

    Hose Cleaning/Sanitizing

First, one of the unique methods for drying hoses that I heard of is to twirl them overhead very fast. The centrifugal force drives out most of the liquid. Next, I have had some issues with bits of black mold in some hoses. This usually gets the hose trashed and replaced with a new one. But I...

Bad taste on the tail end...

Maybe a slight burning sensation in the back of your throat? Could be fusel alcohol, your temps rose considerably for awhile and may have kicked up the yeast actibity. Just a guess, it's hard to describe smells and tastes without being there, kinda like describing colors to a blind person...

Fumbling through my first brew day.

Congrats on your AG brew, fun isn't it. As to your bottling question (not dumb!), I only see two functions for a "bottling bucket", holding the beer to facilitate bottling with the filler wand, and mixing the priming sugar solution evenly into the beer. If you have a cooler for this, fine. Just...

    Keg leak question

In the OP, the keg is leaking when turned upside down. Are you sure it is leaking through the lid? I had a keg with a gas leak and found that the o-ring on the gas-in dip tube was pretty torn up. I replaced all the gaskets and now there are no more leaks. You might want to replace the o-rings on...

    Glycol Counterflow Chiller build

Elegant design but over-engineered now that I look at it. I am going to just plug the whole unit into an Inkbird controller for glycol temperature control. I think there are way too many ways to screw this up so I am just going to put it back the way it was. Except for one thing: I'm wiring the...

    Glycol Counterflow Chiller build

I decided to make use of an old air conditioner laying around the attic and put it work as a glycol chiller for my Exchillerator counterflow chiller. I live in the mid-south and ground water temps are mid to upper 70s, chilling 5 or 10 gallon batches takes a LOT of water, most of which runs down...
