Is the dead space really a problem when doing a full volume mash?

Yeah, and speaking of oxygen, the method of shoving the recirc hose into the pipe lifting holes, means you are introducing a lot of oxygen. The hole is of course above the level of the wort, so it is spraying against the outer wall and then splashing down the empty space before hitting the...

Is the dead space really a problem when doing a full volume mash?

Doug, Ok, I get it. Follow up question. Doing a couple of lift and lowers will homogenize the wort, so I get that. But what about stirring? With 60 minutes of recirc, I would think that the river of hot wort running through the bed would remove any need to stir the wort. Is that...

Is the dead space really a problem when doing a full volume mash?

I have a Brewzilla So I have a solid wall mash pipe instead of a bag. And that means that the wort between the walls of the pipe and the outside of the machine, does not move around much. Can be called "dead space" And it's a surprisingly large amount. Since it's on the outside...

Brewzilla g4 heavy duty false bottom

Yes, it’s a BZ gen 4. The exit is a center hole at the bottom, and the bottom is concave. Everything is nicely pulled to the middle. But that’s also the problem. Liquid takes the path of least resistance. Much of it flows straight down the middle and avoids the hot floor. The heat...

Brewzilla g4 heavy duty false bottom

I thought so. And I also realized that with this, you can't use the heat diffuser plate. So nope.

120v to mash, then propane to boil?

Odie, I recall a brulosophy experiment where they found out that a vigorous boil had no discernible improvement over a gentle simmer. And I think the lodo tribe deliberately do simmer, as they feel a vigorous boil will stir in oxygen.

Brewzilla g4 heavy duty false bottom

Good morning, all Anybody tried this out? On the one hand it looks impressive. On the other hand, the false bottom that comes with the machine seems to work fine https://www.ontariobeerkegs.com/brewzilla-35l-hd-fb.html

    Low efficiency problem

Done. And the PID is set up. And what hungup and tracer said, about involving the dead space between the two walls, today I saw that clearly. Twenty minutes into the mash I directed the outlet hose into the lifting hole, forcing the dead wort between the walls, to join the rest of the wort...

120v to mash, then propane to boil?

I can report that the bzg4 35 240V with neoprene jacket is super fast to reach boil. I"ve even done cold pour overs and that barely slowed down the rise up to boil

    Low efficiency problem

Ok. Have been reading and learning a ton. Will see how next mash goes Am ordering a heat exchange plate. I have been getting mash temperature swings, so will be setting up the PID per kegland recommendations. Finally, I will probably buy the Bluetooth mash thermometer. Question...

    Low efficiency problem

I think you're largely right Whisky. I did not use the top plate, I did not use a heat diffuser plate and I had the pump on full. My next mash will be very different.

    Low efficiency problem

It didn't say. Frankly, I'm still looking around for where to find stated maximal efficiencies. I have not seen this in stated recipes yet. When I see someone say they hit 75% efficiency I think, well, 75% of what?

    Low efficiency problem

Whisky, first I'm glad you spell your first name without an "e" :) Second, about the top plate. No, I did not use it. I was talked out of it by various you tubes. I think I'll try the plate next time. I have soft silicone 1/2 id hose lying on top of the bed and next time it will be...

    Low efficiency problem

Interesting. Although they say only change one variable, I think from this that there are several improvements to be made. First, I'll go back to sparging. In my first attempt, when I pulled it up to the halfway point, I gave it a cold water pour over. Three gentle pours from a two...

    Low efficiency problem

Tracer, does your Anvil have a recirculating pump? Mine does. And in theory the recirc should blend all the water together. But in online research, I think that during the mash I should turn it down to slow. At full speed I think it just channelled through the mash without accomplishing a...

    Low efficiency problem

Makes sense, and easy to do.

    Low efficiency problem

Morning all Just had a very low efficiency problem in my Brewzilla G4 35l. Suspect the problem is with the recirculation hose but am asking here first. Belgian Blonde recipe predicted OG 69 and I only got OG 40. 6.5kg malt and also 500grams cane sugar at end of boil. Four gallon brew. Did...
