    Mold in Fermenter

Well, I'm obviously a newbie with more luck than not, thus far...fingers and eyes crossed. Those photos look scary as >bleep< to me, having never seen such things on a plate, in a glass or bottle. Not knowing the difference between pellicle & mold, safe mushrooms and unsafe, I'll just keep my...

    What are you drinking now?

One beer/week, checking for sufficient carbonation...2 weeks with space heater on low heat under a table with my bottles in a covered tote. The out-of-range (12.34% ABC) Baltic Porter (AIH Zywiec Porter clone+). Quick pour gives some robust foam...forgot to look for lacing... Definitely a...

    What are you drinking now?

I've heard of jackalopes. Is this a foxalope, or a while-tailed red fox? I went to an atypical party at someone's atypical house, and there was a room full of taxidermified critters...with every style of antler, and one lion. I distracted myself from questioning what to think about all those...

    Mold in Sanitizer

I tried to read most of the replies, and saw CSMURDOCK pointed out Easy Clean is not a sanitizer. I was looking for someone to say that before I did. I looked on the ldcarlson website and it says very little beyond being labeled as a cleaner, being oxygen-based, requiring no rinse, and good for...

How long does beer take to carbonate?

I am checking twice a day with a digital thermometer with space heater under a table beer is stored on. It's been between 71& 75 F. Not bold enough to add yeast to individual 11.3-12 oz. bottles & there's no way to defornicate that. I'll take what I get. Opened one tonight after simulating...

How long does beer take to carbonate?

Thank you. The gradual part is my effort to be sure I know how the space heater behaves...haven't used it before.

How long does beer take to carbonate?

Using space heater thermostat, I'm creeping the air temp up slowly. Was about 63.5 F today. I let the space heater sit for a couple hours before I try to bump it up...

How long does beer take to carbonate?

Lots of good answers here but I still have a question...after all the background info... 1) Big Baltic Porter kit that was supposed to be 9.5-10.8% ABV. 2) Used 5.4% more LME by mistake and added 14 oz. corn sugar alcohol boost kit. OG 1.120 2) Aerated & pitched two yeast packets + NB Fast...

What book is on your nightstand? Readers!

High school analysis of fiction ruined fiction for me. All non-fiction now. Beer books: Emma Christenson - Brew Better Beer Charlie Papazian CJOH, not sure which ed. Guitar amp books- Kuehnel, Neumann, Neumann/Irving, Blencowe. Some older 'proper' textbooks in the 'stacks' (boxes)...

Using yeast cake instead of packets

Thank you. Looks like take 1/3-1/2 the cake (just like birthdays!) and not from high-gravity to lower and go lighter to darker in sequence are three points that stand out as worth remembering. I think not having space to start another brew immediately makes this a theoretical question for me.

Pitching on top of yeast cake

    So yeast inbreeding is OK...sometimes.

Using yeast cake instead of packets

I have been reading all these posts about reusing yeast cake in subsequent brews. The mess at the bottom of my carboy I learned how to clean out? I suppose something that large might have a random amount of viable yeast...apparently at minimum, 'enough' to 'if you can't take the heat, stay out...

Yeast Today, Beer Tomorrow: a yeast quest.

Ciao! Visited a friend in the Biella region some years ago. He took us to some touristy towns and we bought some wrapped biscuit/pastries called '...Morbidi'. attempting cognate language skills, I asked 'dead?' He replied, no, soft. Brought them home and several months later noticed no 'best...
