    efficiency question

After reading posts about increasing efficiency I got to thinking. Is the goal to reach as high efficiency as possible or to have a consistent an efficiency as possible. After playing around with so many different recipes in beersmith it seems to me that CONSISTENT efficiency would be best...

    Barley Crusher settings and efficiency

I played with my BC settings and found that 12 gave me the best crush. Having one at 11 and one at 12 is giving you an unequal gap. Nothing wrong with that other than its a coarser crush than 12/12 or even 1/1. CCW is more coarse, CW is finer on both dials. With mine at 12/12 I am getting...

Grrr, this guy needs a grain mill...

Used my new Barley Crusher for the first time on Saturday. Had purchased grain that I had them crush, cause I didnt know if the BC would make it in time. Ran it through there and it was much finer than the Midwest Supplies crush. Did BIAB and hit 80% efficiency. I doubt I would have gotten...

    Cant understand pre-boil gravity numbers

Thanks! I never thought I about stratification that makes sense. Higher gravity material at the bottom. Thanks for the insight!

    BeerSmith on multiple computers

Is there a set of data files that beersmith uses that I could store on dropbox? I want to run BeerSmith from 3 different computers and have it use the same recipe and setup files from all 3 computers. I would store the data and recipe files in DropBox and have it use those. I do this with my...

    Cant understand pre-boil gravity numbers

Yes. I have a lot of tweaking to do in beersmith I guess. I measured my OG after cooling and the boil and it was 1.060. How do I LOSE gravity by boiling? There must have been something wrong with my pre-boil sample or something.

A day of firsts - another first AG brew day

Probably getting bored with these, but I wanted to document it so you guys get the brunt of that. My first first was to do an AG brew and in all I think it went pretty well. I did the "American Pale Ale" out of "Brewing Classic Styles". My second first was using beersmith to run the show...

    Cant understand pre-boil gravity numbers

That is what is even stranger. High temp should read too low, not too high :confused I think I can correct it by dilution, I am just wondering what in my process went wrong? Do I have BS set up wrong?

    Cant understand pre-boil gravity numbers

Okay, First time BIAB. Boiling right now but pre-boil gravity numbers are all whacked out. 9# 2-row 11oz Munich10 11oz Victory 8oz Malted wheat Using BeerSmith. I put 8gal water in pot, heated to 163, ground grains (pretty fine) mashed in, temp settled out at 155F. Mashed for 75...

    BLAM #3 - Golden Strong

Thanks for the info. Is "Brew Line a Monk" a good book? I have been looking for my next brewing book to read and have considered this one. :off:<--sorry

    need advice - go semi-pro?

I also don't have any direct experience in this, but I am in industrial chemist and so know a little bit about "big" batches. Here are some random thoughts: 1. Could you start out smaller and work your way up? Have them start with 1 "house" beer on tap and say "when its gone its gone"...

    BLAM #3 - Golden Strong

What's a BLAM? I assume its some sort of "easy to play with" recipe like a SMaSH?

    Question about harvesting yeast

I have a question or two about harvesting spent yeast that I want to run by all you knowledgeable folks. It seems I have set up a cycle of sorts with my brewing. I brew every other or every third week. This means that the batch I am brewing and the batch I am kegging are very close in time...

First run with BIAB Pot and New Jacket

Got a roll at Menard's. It was the 24"x25' roll and I wrapped it 4 times. The lid is 3 layers. Seems to work really well. I expect the losses to be even less with grain (more mass) and if I warm up the garage (to say 60F instead of 38). I hope to give it a real run this weekend

First run with BIAB Pot and New Jacket

I tried out my BIAB system. Did not have time to actually brew anything (Some game on TV I have to watch). I just ran water. First, tried out the new burner. In a word, WOW. Did the test with 8 gallons of water. Started out at 80F. In the garage at 38F ambient, no wind. It brought the 8...
