Hot side aeration with new pump and re-circulation cooling

I just added a new SS head chugger pump to my BIAB system and have been using it to recirculate my wort through my chiller to get down to pitching temp. My question is with hot side aeration and using the pump to recirculate. When I first start up, there is some air that is purged through the...

    Hints/Tips for speeding/easing 11gal BIAB cleanup...

I was bringing it inside to dump it down the drain. I dont have a dip tube on my "out" valve so that leaves a couple of gallons in the kettle. I guess what I am asking more is if you were not able to pick up your brew kettle, how would you clean it?

    Hints/Tips for speeding/easing 11gal BIAB cleanup...

Hello all, I have been brewing all grain BIAB for a little over a year now. I have ~25 batches under my belt and they have all been drinkable and most of them have been quite good (IMO). I also recently added an 11 gallon BIAB capacity. I have most of the kinks worked out, except for...

    Drill for grain mill

I am looking into this as well. Many have used the harbor freight slow speed VSR drill that is used for mixing paint and concretehttp://http://www.harborfreight.com/1-2-half-inch-heavy-duty-spade-handle-drill-93632.html I believe it has a lock and at max it is 500rpm which would work well...

Hop spider woes solved! In stainless!

I just built the regular PVC hop spider and loved it. Did an IPA on 5/5 for national homebrewers day and it worked great. I was a little worried after I saw the OP's melted, but then re-read that it was because of the lid. Mine never got that warm.

    Q about pitching "yeast cake"

Well, I went ahead and did it and here is what I can report. Holy Fermentation Batman! That thing took off! Nothing explosive (yet) but I was bubbling heavy in about 3 hours and had 5" of kreusen after 24. I also could not believe how warm it got. I think a little too warm, but its an IPA...

    Recipe Critique Please...Jackhammer IPA

Yes, I wanted to try mash hopping for aroma. Just thought I would try it. I was not shooting for a "huge" IPA, but something more than a APA Good point about the Crystal and Honey I dropped to 8/4 oz and added 8 oz Carapils

    Q about pitching "yeast cake"

I guess its not really pitching the yeast and its already in the fermenter. Going to try this for the first time. Here is the plan. It's US-05 that has been working on BierMuncher's Blond Ale for about a week. I am going to try an AIPA next and wanted to pitch it onto this yeast cake...

How to I know if my beer is "good"?

I did not know about the "examples" in the BJCP site. That would really help. I have been trying to get commercial examples, but even then how do I know if they are "good" and "correct". At some point personal preference has to take over, I just want to brew better beer and I think that means...

How to I know if my beer is "good"?

I like beer. Most of us do. However, I have been brewing new styles lately and I do not know if they are "good". I dont have access to a lot of competitions or other tasters that know any more about how they "should" taste than I do. How can I find out what, for example, my Belgian Wit...

    How to build brew stand

I cant weld. What is the best way/material to use to make a sturdy brew stand that would be no-weld. I was thinking unistrut or something like that. I would like to avoid wood if possible. Thanks.

Modified Batch Sparging - Taking an idea from BIAB

2x wilserbrewer Also, go for a slightly finer crush and more accurate temps and do more of a drain or squeeze even to get the most liquid recovered. That is what I have been doing with no sparge or mash out and getting ~75%-80% efficiency.

Does BIAB Lead to Cloudy Beer?

I have been interested in this as well. I have 4 all grain BIAB runs under my belt, and1 has been completely crystal clear (cream of three crops ale) two have been cloudy although one is only a few days in the keg but the other one (an IPA) never really cleared. The fourth was too dark for me...

    Please help me identify flavor

I like a wide range of beers and this one is at the lighter end. The thread for the recipe (here on HBT) has 123 pages to it, so I think its a pretty popular recipe. I like it really a lot as I do IPAs Bocks and pretty much all styles (have not found a barleywine I like yet, but I have not...

    Please help me identify flavor

I recently brewed BierMunchers "Cream of Three Crops Ale". Everything went to plan and right now the beer tastes awesome. However, my question is with the flavor that I got when I first tasted it during and right after kegging. The only way I know how to describe it is a "heineken" flavor...

    Second BIAB went really well

I brewed BM's "Cream of Three Crops Ale". Did the 5 gallon recipe. I think I finally have BeerSmith dialed in for temps and volumes. I started with 7.6gal of water heated to 156 and doughed in. Temp went down to 153. I stirred a little and got it to 151 (was shooting for 150). Mashed for...
