Hi everyone. So it's nearly time for me to bottle my first ever batch! I managed to get some bottles for free from a local pub (saved a bit of cash there!) and I have my bottling bucket all set up, I've also ordered some starsan so I can make sure everything is sanitised properly. So now I'm...

    UK equivalant to starsan

    UK equivalant to starsan

Hi guys. I live in the UK and (as far as I'm aware) starsan isn't available here, I've been to a couple of home brew shops and they don't have it. The only thing they have and which I'm using now is dissolved in water and then rinsed out. Is there a UK equivalent that I could get as its a real...

Oh ok that's good to know, so how will I know when fermentation is complete? I can't see any bubbles because the foam is obscuring the surface. I have a hydrometer but I can't work out how to use it and if I drop that in then it will disturb the surface foam as well

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the help and advice so far. I have just got my first tinned beer kit going, all the froth that's appeared on the surface, do I scoop that off or just leave it? Also, I have ordered Joy of Home Brewing so I should receive that in the next few days :) J

Replacement for chemical nutrient and energiser

Banana could give a nice after taste I'd have thought. What sort of quantities would you suggest?

Replacement for chemical nutrient and energiser

Hi all. So I've just made a gallon of JAOM and I like the idea of using orange peel and raisins instead of chemical nutrient and energiser. I was wondering if anybody has any experience or ideas for other natural ingredients that can be used as a replacement? I like the idea of using as few...

Mead making without chemical energizer amd nutrients

Hi guys. So I want to have a go at making up a 1 gallon batch of mead and I'm using 3.75 pounds of orange blossom honey as I prefer it sweet. Annoyingly I can't tell you what the type of yeast I'm using is as here in the UK it is very much a one for all general wine making yeast but that's...

Hi all. So I visited my local home brew shop and got some bits and some advice. I couldn't find the book you all mentioned so I will try somewhere else, failing that I'll buy it online. I'm going to do a few more kits as there are some good ones where you still have to do all the mixing but...

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions :) I think I will carry on with the ready made kits whilst I pick up a copy of the books that have been suggested and go from there, seems like the most logical steps. I am located in Hastings, UK if anyone is around from there. I have found a home...

Hi everyone. I'm completely new to brewing and I really don't know where to start. Ive had a go at brewing mead but only the very very simple stuff. I have brewed a ready mixed 5 gallon real ale canned starter kit thingy but I would love to have a go at making my own real ale from scratch but...

    Back-sweetening

So decant it into a mixing bucket, add the sweetening solution and then decant back into the DJs?

    Back-sweetening

That sounds good, I'll look into that :) So, when I back sweeten with the half honey, half water mix - should I use the same type of honey as what I made it with (ie orange blossom) or can I do this with any type? Also, what is the best way to mix it as I'm sure I read somewhere that I don't...

    Back-sweetening

I have 2 one gallon Demijons (can't get the big five gallon ones in the UK) I'm still new to it all so I'm not planning on trying to carbonate just yet anyway

    Back-sweetening

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum so please bear with :) I started mead making last year and in April I'm getting married. My plan is to use my mead at the wedding but I'm at the point of bottling and it's still a bit too dry for my liking. I used 6 pounds of orange blossom honey to 2 gallons...
